For your can to be used to melt snow you need to place it on a 'lit' fire - fire is 4 on you keyboard. Once you have selected the can/cans from you inventory, one or two of the stones which are now around the fire will be highlighted, place you can/cans there. Click on the can and you will get a drop down list, select how much water you want - up to 2 ltrs/4 pints if you are using imperial - the size of the can will limit your choice. Select cook and the fire will melt/boil the snow. There will be a timer telling you how long till it's done. Take it when it is done. If you select the pot you are using you will get the choice to pass time if you don't want to wait - this will cause a rapid boil/cook. If you have something else to do, such as read/mend - you can now use the cooking time to do so (multi-tasking) Hope this helps - good luck.
There seems to be a bug possibly introduced in one of the hotfixes recently.
One way to work through that can be pickup the can as if you're going to place it then move it around a bit before placing it. Placing the can right on the cooking surface seems to have some issue, but if you say pick it up from the ground and put it on the cooking surface or pick it up from the surface then (for want of a better word) move it away for a moment or so, then put it back down that seems to fix the problem that time. At least that is how I worked around the problem.
Hope this helps.
