Report a translation problem
The developers could program it to despawn on one side of the door and respawn on the other. That is pretty much what the protagonist does when he enters/exits a building. In fact, that is what happens when the protagonist goes anywhere that has the autosave function. The same can be done with a campanion, just like if he was right on your heels.
When it comes to food and water, the developers will have to make it so the protagonist can use the pans and bowls in the houses. But as far as food goes, I've never seen a dog get finicky about eating off the floor or ground.
