Desolation point is almost perfect?
Is it just me, or is desolation point almost perfect for setting up and endgame base? It seems to have almost everything you need: Workbenches, a forge, a base with plenty of room and storage, easily accesible coal sources, abundant wildlife, plenty of shoreline for scavanging, and my personal favorite, a lighthouse with not only a great view up top, but also the cosiest interior of any structure in the game (imo). The ONLY thing stopping this from being a hands down best choice end game location is a lack of fishing huts. This is a huge deal breaker for me, since I rely mostly on fish for food, due to the fact that for the simple outlay of about 2 scrap metal for fish hooks, you can fish up enough calories and lamp oil for at least 50 days.

What do you guys think? Do the other perks make up for the lack of fishing, or is it better to set up shop in costal highway and make supply runs for arrowheads and tools?

Personally I'm not a fan of DP. Just the general lack of stuff to do there, I guess.

I guess it depends on your preferences, and playstyle. I love DP. My favorite map out of all, still. I don't fish much, so no fishing huts isn't a big deal to me. Lots of bunnies, lots of deer, lots of wolves and a bear or 2. Not sure where the Moose hangs out on DP, never have seen scraped trees there yet. Yes, it is small, but plently of food, and fuel for fires. And I just like Hibernia, the Lighthouse and the Stone Church. Beachcombing can wash up more rare or needed items. Planning on making DP my final stop when/if I get my current run to 500 days. I may make runs back to CH if I feel the need to fish, lol!

What you do is completely up to you. :)

I use costal highway, because I live on fishing

I don't know honestly. Desolation Point always seems to unwelcome, scary and mysterious to me. Not sure why either! It might be that the map is just too small and not super cozy. (Spot on though about the lighthouse! That would be awesome to be a lighthouse keeper)

My personal all time favorite place to retire though is undecided. It's either the PV farmstead or the camp office in ML. They're both so darn cozy and there's neary(ish) fishing, plenty of wildlife, and just cozy big regions overall. The only thing missing IMO from mystery lake to make it perfect is a forge.

I find it difficult to get enough food there if I don't have a bow. Also, I find the wolves outside the lighthouse to be a major inconvenience when trying to get anywhere. Trying to get up to the bunnies or the deer by the road is always a big risk.

The thing I've missed in DP is the moose - have I just been unlucky?
And is there a chance of a moose spawn in Crumbling Hwy?

I prefer the Hut at TWM-lacks a forge but fish ,rabbits and deer are on your doorstep. A bear shows up at the lake every 10 days or so with a great safe kill spot from the fallen tree. A moose spawn is virtually next to the hut on the path back to PV-also with a safe kill spot from a fallen tree. Wolves are easily visible out on the lake and there is no chance of being surprised as you go out your front door. Have enough fish hooks on hand and you could run it out for a very long time.Meanwhile the relatively frequent moose and bear hunts add some adventure to just surviving.

I've seen some folks say they saw a Moose or killed a Moose on the bridge over Matt's Truck, or very closeby. But yeah, I have never seen one in DP yet either. Probably shows up while I am busy on the Riken forging arrowheads. xD

I concur, DP is the ideal place for "retire", has all you need - including fish in beachcombing.

BTW - You can 'parkour" climb for Lighthouse without use the bridges, but can't be encumbered.

For me the ideal game: TMW (to have a difficult start :steammocking:) > PV > ML > MT > FM > BR > FM > ML > CH > DP, when you get there always have all you need, just need keep.

If you go for there after 200-300 days in game the beach are full of stuff. :steamhappy:

Interesting thought... How do you fight the fever without a fire? No open caves? There is the church but ambient temps will be negative. I guess you could use CrH as a cache? Maybe...

Spend lots of time outdoors at the top of the Lighthouse, during the day. Riken top deck as well, the bear cave up top just before the broken bridge (provided Old Grumpy is dealt with...), snow shelter under the outdoor "porch" area at Hibernia, Stone Church... lots of good places to remain outdoors to deal with CF. On Stalker and below, anyhow. May not be so easy on Loper. And on Talker and below, you usually still need a campfire. Katie's Corner has a decently sheltered spot to tuck into if need be, never had a predator come up and bother me there either.

But yeah, it is my end game destination. ML and the Camp Office was the destination for the end of my Stalker 200 Day run, back during Early Access, when we still had that achievement. And once I hit 200+ days, it was just a matte of finding where I wanted to put her to rest. DP will be the same, I am not interested in going beyond the achievement popping. I don't enjoy "surviving just to survive", I do like the early hectic struggle to get set up and make it so I can survive. I love Survival Mode, but am really looking forward to the redux Wintermute episodes, and the final episodes. I do like having an end goal to aim for. Subnautica was the same for me in EA days, the endless open world sandbox was amazing, make all the stuff, see all the places, play with all the fishies, dance with the Reapers... but after building the giant bases and hitting every spot on the map, it got boring. (I really should go play again and finish the storyline the game has now... eventually.)

Day 273 of Custom run.

Killed moose on bridge over Matt's Truck early days, but haven't seen it spawn in DP since then. I quite like DP but it always feels out of the way - back of beyond kind of thing.

Settled in Coastal Highway for the fishing so it's but a short trip to DP, just started beachcombing, for the fun of it - going for the 500 days achievement is boring but necessary imo, made up my mind to do it this run though. I too prefer the early game it seems. :)

I like DP but it is out of the way and you have to deal with the wolves in CrH.
Nil Desperandum Apr 2, 2018 @ 3:58am
Crumbling Highway wolves, only ever seen one down on the ice - but three up behind The Basement - all depends on difficulty of course. I usually go the ice way, neat little cave down there where you can hide/rest up if you need to.

@marbanno - I use a snow shelter as a CF retreat in DP - there's a nice little niche a little way in front of the Lighthouse, close to it. No wolves come across the bridges so safe/secure from wolves there, I usually cull the wolves that hang out at the top of the path there, to remove their threat to access the Lighthouse, they take ages to respawn if you leave behind guts/hide or a portion of meat.

The top of lighthouse and riken are way too cold on interloper. You can't pass any significant time there.
