How to kill a wolf with a bow? It seems impossible.
I'm trying to kill some wolves for their pelts. But can't make it. I'm trying to kill them with bow, but they never stop. Either they are attacking me or they run off because they can't reach me in front of my house. I couldn't be able to get a clear shot on one of them. I'm dropping baits but it seems wolves don't care about baits. They never walk towards baits. Is this a bug or game supposed to work like this or am i doing something wrong?

PS: I don't want to use rifle.

You jsut need get used to it.

For me is hunting with bow much easier and more precise than with rifle where the hit-box is still mysterious to me and not matching the rifle iron...

Yea, place bait and than shot wolf was very lame tactic and fixed so this not work anymore. Just make clear area between you and wolf and shot him to face during his charge. Train on other targets like rabbits to get the feeling, train archery skill up helps too (note skill is raised just by crafting arrow so is not so unusual reach like level 2-3 even prior first shot..)

Making baiting harder isn't necessarily bad as it was extremely easy, but it's not entirely clear that some of the changes in wildlife behavior aren't a bug

Things to keep in mind when hunting anything in the game, but especially if you're trying to get sneaky close to a wolf without getting chomped or spooking it - scent and line of sight matter. Scent is a thing, even if you're not carrying anything you think has scent; there's just you as a human and you smell to animals. So, you want to be downwind and behind'ish them. You'll be surprised how close you can get to critters if they can't smell or see you and you aren't stomping through the snow like an elephant.

Maybe try to find a hunting position where the wolf can't get you, such as climbing on those fallen trees 8 ft. in the air. Then use smelly scent to attract them in instead of dropping as decoys.

Not sure if this will work yet, or if they will run away like your porch scenario. Or maybe the dev's just nerfed porch hunting as well.

That, of course, depends...

Sounds like they need to add a shaolin mode which forces me to meditate for 512 h before taking a single shot. Or they make it really more real and give me the chance to build traps and spears and let me throw rocks that I gathered in a pile next to me or... after months in the wilderness, one can expect to be a bit more inventive than just learning to shoot only when charged directly.

I am talking about story mode, not survival with selectable difficulty.

Maybe that's an idea. Get close enough to not aggro the wolf. Then throw rocks to get their attention and draw them close enough to take a shot.

What is the issue with Story mode Timberwolves?

You have revolver, rifle - both with plenty of ammo, bow and arrow and distress pistol for deal with then.

Since their tactics are different from normal (black) wolves, adapt you tactics for fight then, for example blue flare keep then at bay and allow you moves backward until find something for back your "six" and don't allow then flank you, and thus practice "turkey shoot". :steammocking:

"Hardened survivor" mode:

Uhhh... you can?

Wolves are attracted to noise. If you throw a stone somewhere nearby, they will go toward the noise, which you could use to distract them and move past or attract them to a specific spot you want. Shooting a wolf as it charges shouldn't be your go-to plan; it's the oh-$#!^ plan. You can shoot wolves at good range with a rifle. You can sneak up pretty freaking close to them to shoot with any of the three weapons. You can sneak by them and have them be none-the-wiser.

There's also the option to just walk (or run) away from the wolf (regular variety, don't think that will fly with timber wolves); you walk faster than them. It'll follow and even run to catch up if it can, but if you can break line of sight long enough or get far enough away, it can drop aggro. Almost always you'll have more than enough time to get some place you can force it to drop aggro, like a vehicle or building. Occasionally, if they follow long enough, they might get fed up and get close enough to go into attack.

Climb up on a fallen tree trunk. It's easier that way.

The new bait mechanics are a direct response from the devs to stop the easy bait/kill shots. I need to fool around with it a bunch more.

So, direct charge shots may be the only way to clear them. Maybe the devs want us and the wolves to be more neighbors then them a running kill tally. It certainly opens up more variation, and consequently difficulty.

i kinda agree with the easy bait/kill shots, but how the wolves can "vacuum/eat" the decoys from 30+ mts away i fully disagree, they need find a better mechanic, like they did with the cooking system.

and direct shots doesnt work either, pleople were complaining about it and i tested already with the rifle and the revolver, the bow aim is broken right now and cant be tested.. wolves are immune to headshots/death when charging at you. they can get the full shot at the head and it doesnt stop it from pounding you.

Hi, if he's by passing your bait, you may be to close. There's a rank factor involved, you don't want to stench more than your bait at close range. Drop your bait when he has locked on to you. Not to far away, not to close. Back-up & veer about 45-60 degrees to the side. Otherwise, go for the head shot. At close range, elevate your aim for his knee caps. Neck shots seem to be the best. I prefer to shoot before he grabs my bait. It takes practice. This works for me. P.S. try this out on deer first.

exactly this is what is happening with every wolf, they have temporarily immunity to head shots, that 1-2 secs is enough to normal wolves to maul you, and while is mauling you the immunity expire and the game takes the wolf as alive since it register another action instead of dying.
