Looks like I have at least a few more days before I try the loooong dark
After that you'll discover the real game.
And then you'll go interloper... and you'll discover the true soul of the Long Dark.
... and as for "evolution", you'll never go back !
Concerning quests, I must say I enjoyed them much as I started playing TLD because I didn't know the maps indeed.. Those quests help you get familiar with the maps and the wintermute mode help you manage risks with various savegames.
But story mode teaches you the basics... and for the first time, all the locations in the game "make sense." They have a purpose. And you get to learn their purposes through a fairly enjoyable story. I'm working through Episode 3 at the moment... and I have to say, finally the region of Pleasant Valley makes sense! And all the locations I had learned and memorized in survival mode now have new significance... and some of them have changed a great deal...for the better, I think!
I have not played survival mode since the release of Episode 3... so I am eager to see how many of the changes (especially in Pleasant Valley) are the same in survival mode.
Either way, enjoy the game! It's a process of learning to love it... you may get hooked on it, since it's different each time you play it!
