wintermute or survival?
Just got the game, and went into the story mode. Ive gotten to grey mother and im wondering if I should keep going with story or if survival would be more rewarding.

story mod will teach you mechanics..then go to survival bro

At what point have I learned the mechanics?

Thanks! Thats a very thorough answer.
Looks like I have at least a few more days before I try the loooong dark

I'd advice you to go with survival mode. Start from Mystery Lake and pick either Pilgrim or Voyager difficulty. This way you have more relaxed time to learn all the mechanics and adopt some tactics that work for you. Good luck!

Personally i dont care for the survival mode, it has no end goal. Story is very good and worth playing, its the only reason I bought the game tbh.

Story mode is a very good tutorial.

After that you'll discover the real game.

And then you'll go interloper... and you'll discover the true soul of the Long Dark.

Survival, but I am enjoying Story mode more than I thought I would.

survival mode!! non linear and infinitely replayable, in unique ways!

I'm really enjoying it too! I wonder what it would be like going on these story mode quests with no prior knowledge of the maps? Completely different, to be sure.

This is so true. You and the game will evolve together.
:)
... and as for "evolution", you'll never go back !

Concerning quests, I must say I enjoyed them much as I started playing TLD because I didn't know the maps indeed.. Those quests help you get familiar with the maps and the wintermute mode help you manage risks with various savegames.

I feel like you should play survival for a while first until you can reach Interloper difficulty and explore all the maps first. Wintermute/Story gives you all the maps and checkpoints that it would spoil the immersion and discovering things for yourself and you won't get the full survival experience.

I've played a few hours in survival and none in story. I can say that there is plenty in survival to keep me busy. Maybe when I'm done with it I will try story, but that's just me.

I love survival mode, and I totally agree that when you reach Interloper level, you finally touch on the true soul of the game - the loneliness, the dark future of eventually knowing you will run out of all supplies, but the absolute hope that THIS time (knock on wood) you will spawn in a place that has a couple of important resources (please God-- some matches, and a sleeping bag, maybe even a lantern!), and that you will survive long enough to explore your favorite places... again.

But story mode teaches you the basics... and for the first time, all the locations in the game "make sense." They have a purpose. And you get to learn their purposes through a fairly enjoyable story. I'm working through Episode 3 at the moment... and I have to say, finally the region of Pleasant Valley makes sense! And all the locations I had learned and memorized in survival mode now have new significance... and some of them have changed a great deal...for the better, I think!

I have not played survival mode since the release of Episode 3... so I am eager to see how many of the changes (especially in Pleasant Valley) are the same in survival mode.

Either way, enjoy the game! It's a process of learning to love it... you may get hooked on it, since it's different each time you play it!

I got the game when it was in it's early stages 2015. Have not touched story mode yet. The sandbox part of the game could and hopefully will last a very long time. If more regions are released, a couple a year or so, I know it will, at least for me. 1800 hours of enjoyment.. For 20 bucks. I would say thats a heck of a deal
