With practice I can now hit a rabbit most times. Position yourself so that the rabbit is coming straight at you. Stay crouched.
Right-click to get ready to throw, and position the rabbit directly above your thumb. Wait until it's really near to you, and throw.
Immediately come out of crouch and run to the rabbit. Look at it, left-click to pick it up, left-click again to kill it.
[Snaring]
After killing rabbits with stones, be sure to put their guts down to cure straightaway. When cured, you can make snares with the guts + reclaimed wood.
I find that 5 snares yields 2-4 rabbits per day (Stalker difficulty), so you will want more than 5 snares if you want rabbit to be your primary food source.
Keep checking every day and keep curing the guts. Once you're through 5 days, you will have a constant supply of meat, and enough guts to make new snares and repair ruined ones.
[The problem]
The problem for me is that harvesting several rabbits per day really takes its toll on your knife. And harvesting by hand uses up almost as many calories as you get from eating the meat.
This is purely anecdotal, no data to prove it, but I put my snares down in grass (in rabbit areas of course).
You should be harvesting rabbits by hand, especially in the early game to drive your carcass skill up. It's a great thing to do indoors after sundown if you still need to tire out before bed.
When you start getting oodles of rabbit skins and guts and have a lot of fishing tackle, repair your rabbit mittens every day to drive your sewing skill up.
Went to a rabbit bowl, where they where corralled. Started throwing stones wildly, randomy, at anything that moved. Kept moving aroind picking up stones, throwing them with wild abandon, ignoring any bunnies I hit that did not pop the cheevo. One stone bounced... hit a bunny running away as it bounced bac up. Cheevo popped. Died happy in the freezing wasteland.
No skill at all. I am pretty good with stoning bunnies while crouched or hidden behind trees, ambush style, close up. Distance shots? Nupe, lol!
You can practice your horizontal plane by throwing stones at thin trees or rocks on the ground. Once you can do it you can’t undo it. Rabbits galore.
