Just scared a wolf ... but dunno how.
Was walking under the bridge near hydro dam. and behind a corner i find a wolf at 2meter from me.
I almost paniched and i retreat and try to press 2 for equip my pistol but before i was able to do that, the wolf run away scared by me. the problem is that i was not holding anything. No torch, no flare, nothing..... there's no bear in that zone so it cannot be scared by a bear.

How is this possible and how scaring wolf work in current patch?

Did you wear a wolf skin coat? It has a chance to scare wolves, but it's pretty rare

By luck you have meet a small wolf (they weigh ~ 3.5 kg), those sometimes run away scared instead jump you. Happens some times, and after latest patches seems more frequently.

Its possible you triggered his fear response naturally, but its also possible you exploited an error in wolf pathing. They flee in a panic if they sense you but then cannot path to you. And they have trouble pathing close to walls and over the tiny snowbanks. So it could just be poor pathing worked in your favor.

The most important question here is what experience mode are you playing? In Pilgrim, all animals, predator and prey, will flee from you. Wolves and bears will only attack if provokes, and you have to literally run up and punch them in the face to provoke them.
They do that sometimes. Some wolf behaviour is a little random. I've had wolves ignore bait, walking over it growling for something fresher.

I had an experience similar to yours as well. I walked over a ridge onto the crumbling highway only to meet a wolf not 5 feet away. We startled each other it seems as he took off in the opposite direction and I did the same at first.

Always a chance to scare a wolf. Lower on higher difficulties.

I play custom set upon interlooper with just rifle and time x4 added.
Probably i was very lucky or as i was moving over some ice block near the bridge the pathfinding broke up and wolf run away.

I forget to mention that this happens in Interloper, so the wolf fear is not a Pilgrim thing.

And too (Interloper) when attracting ML lake 3 wolves with smell from Camp office Porch, one when near the fallen tree panic and run away most times.

It happens even with charging bears, lately. I have reported that to the help desk.

This is the right answer. Wolves are afraid of magicians. If you suddenly disappear, they can be frightened. It works on bears too, sometimes when you don't want them to freak out and run away. You can trigger it pretty easily by going up an angled tree and hanging around the point where it becomes impossible for them to reach you.

If I need to craft at ch fish camp that's how I scare the bear away unarmed. Provoke it then get on porch.

Happens again - and save my back.

Interloper - I am going for PV Abandoned Bunker, by the trail that pass in front bear cave.
When I reach this point, the bear obviously resolve do their morning walking be the same path.

Then, for avoid the bear I start climb the hill at right, and take a sprain, and in the same moment a wolf bark... and then a wolf crying and running away.

I continue climbing and meet the wolf again, and again he scare and run away.

I decide stop this "Russian Roulette" and start follow the slow bear... until in the Hunter Blind he turn for right and give clear path for Abandoned Bunker.

Could help that I am using two "Wolf'jackets". :steammocking:
