Hunting deer with a bow
Just wondering if I'm missing something here.

The only way for me to hit a deer with the bow is to take a long distance shot, which I'm alright with. My problem is that I've hit the same deer 2 or 3 times with the bow and there isn't even a blood trail. There's a blood splatter upon contact but the arrow won't stick in the deer either, seems to bounce right off.

Is this intended?

No I believe that if you get the blood splater graphic there should be a blood trail.

You can crouch and get pretty darn close to those deer before you shoot. Go slow and use cover such as trees and rocks to hide your self from the deer.

I can't fire it while crouched which is definitely throwing me off a bit, that's why I'm taking shots from quite a distance, I don't have too much luck getting close.

There's a big blood splatter but no trail. Definitely seems like some kind of bug.

You can shoot while crouched at level 5 archery, which is very nice.

Untill I got level 5 archery, I would crouch and get really close to the deer. when I'm close enough to take a shot, I stand up and shoot the deer within 5 seconds and I usually get a good shot on him before he's gone. It works everytime for me, as long as I actaully land the arrow on him.

If you can crouch then you can get rediculously close and even pick the eye to shoot him in...one shot kill almost every time. I use the long bow technique for moose which is quite fun. They seem to not know where its coming from and 6 arrows later they are down.

I had to watch a couple YouTube videos.

I followed from directly behind, crouching. Stood up and shoot quick. Insta killed two this way.
Earlier I had made several attempts and missed horribly.

you can get quiet close while crouching, line up the shot with the dot, then the instant you hit ctrl to stand up, hold left mouse button to draw and shoot.(dont wait for stand animation to finish, start drawing bow the instant after you hit uncrouch button.) if you dont delay, they dont have a chance to run. Geltaz has a good youtube instructional video on it.

Sometimes you get unlucky with arrow shots and you do hit, see blood spash, and seem to damage them, but no bleeding. I see it on wolves too. I never have it happen on headshots though, so it might have to do with how solid you aim and angle of impact is.

I watch the deer for a while, since it’s movements repeat. If it stands still and bows it’s head to eat, you have a few seconds until it runs.

Edit: I use a common technique in interloper to save arrows which works in every difficulty. Try to hunt the deer into a wolf and let him kill it. Then either kill the wolf or scare it away with a fire

yeah, if you watch for the head dip, then you can get a clean shot if you are quick, as you stand up, before they run. Thats what i was referring to. I hunted a lot of deer last night to do some testing, and it seems like there is a lot of randomness to deer shots on if the arrow sticks and they bleed, or if it causes a blood spash but the arrow falls to the ground and they dont bleed. if it doesnt stick, it doesnt seem to even hurt them at all.(I hit one 3 times this way, didnt die or bleed. Wasnt until the 4th hit that stuck and the deer ran off and eventually bled out. I would think that the 3rd or 4th successful hit would just kill it outright.(archery level 3 at the time, though at the end of testing i got level 4) Seems a bit wonky on if arrows stick, or not, and the target bleeds.

Yes. I remember asking a similar question and was told Hinterland did include glancing blows. If you find the arrow and saw the blood spray then it glanced off. Not enough to stick in, not enough to trigger the bleed out.

You had glancing blows. Your arrows grazed the animal, which opened a small cut, which will show a small blood spray animation. But you did not cause a severe enough wound to cause lasting blood flow. Like nicking yourself with a razon. You may see blood immediately, but the wound you gave yourself isn't even big enough to need a bandage. You did not hit directly into anything the arrow could or would stick into. This is normal. Not a bug. Moving targets are not easy to hit at times, and if they moved away from the path of the arrow, the arrow can bounce or just graze. It has happened to most, if not all, of us in the game at some point. Be glad you found your arrow. Often those suckers will scoot along the ice or roll away to some near-impossible to find spots.

It happens. It is frustrating. But it isn't a bug. Just RNJesus having fun with you. :)

Super easy bow hunting guide:

you will need:
A bow
some arrows
a few stones
patience

step 1: find deer, preferably one that's alone
step 2: have a clear path between you and the deer
step 3: throw stone so it lands behind the deer
step 4: when deer runs from the stone, take out the bow and cap the MOFO before he gets to you.
