While the addition of multiple layers is immediately appealing, it's not the best option at all times. Speed is absolutely crucial now and with wetness impacting your ambient temps, there are many factors to consider.
I've mentioned before but I'll say again, I'm doubling down on the idea of having different "go bags" or loadouts for specific tasks. As of now, I have at least 3 different sets - none of which are crafted -
light foraging - 1 layer of somewhat protective clothing (except for socks & hat; they don't add weight). I'll use this for short well known movement to collect items
Harvesting - 2 layer. Heavier protective clothes in event of animals. matches, stim, old mans, and a hatchet and knife (note if no tools; carry extra wood etc to thaw carcasesss)
Travel - 1 layer; waterproof; light. Carry essentials for escape and evasion while moving to a new location. This is based on the premise, I will find items (natural or otherwise) leaving items behind also allows for new items reducing impact on sprinting.
Just my thoughts Happy NY!
My loadout is fairly light (6.25 for clothing 5-7 for gear) I've got a 14 warmth bonus and 4 wind
I've never gotten frostbite or hypothermia on any difficulty in the 26 hrs I've played since the update and I've visiting and roamed around in every map region with the same loadout
For me I wear items I would wear when out in the woods in real life. I leave the ski boots for skiing. I prefer wool layers and wear my trail boots year round.
The result is that I feel more connected to the challenges I face and feel rewarded for the benefits I receive from my choice in gear. All in all it makes the game far more immersive and engaging for me
In the end you won't know what works for you until you've experimented more with different tactics and methods.
Crafted clothing is exceptionally warm now and perfectly suited for some nice ice fishing
WET: The slot with that particular clothing article is filling with blue color from the bottom. More blue = more wet.
FROZEN: The slot with that particular clothing article is fully blue and is becoming "light blue" from the bottom. More "light blue" = more frozen. Once the item is fully frozen, the risk of frostbite starts growing and you need to do something about it, otherwise your body part will suffer permanent damage (dead tissue).
With the man-made clothing, at first I was cold and weighed down too much, but now I have it balanced sort of like it was before, running around with a standard load of 25kg of clothes and standard gear. I'm still experimenting on different outfits for different expeditions.
After the new clothing system appeared, the only crafted items better than found items is the rabbit fur mittens and the bear skin coat. My boots are better than deerskin, my coats better than wolfskin, pants better than deerskin. Maybe crafted would be useful if you haven't found the better stuff yet. I miss the incentive to collect hides other than bear and rabbit.
