Freezing Meat?
Perhaps I've simply not noticed it, but is it not possible to freeze meat in the game? We NEED some way to preserve food in this game, and I find it an extreme pain in the rear that we can't leave meat outside to freeze, thus prolonging it's "shelf" life. It's bad enough that the canned food goes bad so quickly, but even if just for realisim's sake, I feel that we need this. If the deer I shot can freeze, why can't the meat I carved off of it?

I really, really like this game, but I am really hoping we get a feature like this added. Or maybe the ability to make jerky. Just something to allow us to preserve food (considering the crazy fast spoilage rate of everything).

What are all of your thoughts?

You can drop meat and fish outdoors in the snow. As long as you don;t drop any of it as a decoy in the pile or nearby, it is safe from predators. They won;t detect it, and will walk right by it. Storing meat and fish outside in the snow will slow the deay rate considerably.

Good guide hee that explains decay rates on almost everything, though the clothing and a few other things may be outdated afterthis most recent update,

I"ve been storing mine outside and the cold freezing the meat makes total sense as its almost always below frezzing but the part about the animals just ignoring it kinda hurts realism for me a bit. Would like to be able to construct a basket and hang it from a tree limb with a mountianeering rope. Adds just a little more challenge and makes it seem way more real

Apparently still safe to eat though, and our character has most likely done worse by eating dog food...

But yeah, outdoors (and indoors even) is often below freezing such that food would be already frozen / freeze if you leave it there. You'd think you might need to thaw it out by carrying it around a bit or take longer while cooking it.

Freezers also tend to operate around 0 degrees F (-17 C). Not uncommon outdoor game temperatures, but the fluctuation probably effects the preservation. Maybe there would be some nutrient loss too perhaps.

Same goes for all the bottled water I prep and store, shouldn't it be unfrozen before I can drink it?

I had thought about this before, meat loses about 1-2% per day when left outside, so that makes for about 40-50 days of assured storage right there. Which is about how long i'd leave something in the freezer.

Though as the temperature fluctuates, I'd imagine it not as ideal as our home freezers. Maybe bury it in snow and ice :)
