Why wolves bark?
Is this happening irl too? I never heard about barking wolves. and they do that all the time in the game. I thought they are more like silent hunters. you know, sneak up on you, if you don't check your sides

This is a wolf attack, so please watch it at your own risk.
Here you can see how they bark...

You will notice that the wolf barking is a defensive bark NOT an aggressive one. Please find video of a wolf attacking and barking. All canines can potentially bark but don't. :steambored:

Now i get it, you where sayingthat they dont bark all the time.
Not that they DONT bark, like on your first comment.
The other part is correct, devs arent trying to make this game realistic, thats cause wolves bark all the time. (every cannis can bark right ?)

Well you need to understand where op was coming from. When wolves attack you in game they are barking and growling. They don't do that irl, hence, my comment. :)

it's inaccurate to say that wolves don't bark.

in the instance of a lone wolf that is feeling threatened, barks are normally used defensively as a warning to the supposed danger: "back off"

wolves very intelligent and are highly social animals amongst themselves and will tend to hunt in packs...these wolves will use combinations of growls/barks/howls in order to communicate with other wolves to coordinate with each other while taking down game.

They will also tend to communicate via barks and howls when off hunt to convey other forms of information as well such as possible threats, trespassing alien wolves, possible food source, and generally keeping track of each other's location.

Apparently the wiki says that in The Long Dark, if one wolf howls every other wolf in the vicinity will howl back in response which I take is a sign that the developers understand these wolf social tendancies.

The mentality on Steam is depressing.
Excorpion Dec 23, 2016 @ 11:27am
Well maybe you need to be more precise instead of just putting

"They don't (bark)"
Soooo....., you would rather they remain silent ingame as they attack you?

Folks, we have people from all over the world who play The Long Dark -- and we all do the best we can to make ourselves understood, no matter the language we happen to speak.

Keep it friendly and respectful or take it someplace else. All survivors are welcome here.

well it would be awesome if wolves could stay silent to the moment when they bite your neck. so that you must always look around for them sneaking up on you
besides, it's not like you yell and scream, when trying to catch a rabbit

The wolves in game don't only bark when attacking they also do so when they're hunting other animals.I think it's merely a mechanic to signify that they are on the prowl. so be wary of their pressence.
