How to hunt moose
I am not sure if you can bait them like the wolf or bear and I am at BR.

Carefully - a moose bit my sister once...

Sorry, I couldn't help it! But I'm starting to dread my first encounter with one,

I got crushed by one on Pilgrim. Broken Ribs.

I don't think they get baited...not carnivore preds.

Also, on Pilgrim, it took six tries to kill one, just testing it out. Four times I could NOT get it to bleed. Fifth time I hit and I charged, so esc'd out to try again. Then sixth time I killed one shot to the body from its flank. Go figure.

Now, even though it didn't bleed, like a bear if it is hit by surprise it will run. Hit it dead on and it's going to hit you dead on.

Based on the protection of their craft cloak, I'm figuring they might be tough to bleed.

41kg of meat on mine.

Oh yeah but it was just fooling around. Pilgrim, kept loading until I had a moose at Hunting Lodge or near, a weapon, etc. Then kept loading looking to get a bleed shot. Then on that last shot I killed it. I was actually very, very surprised when it crumpled from a L1 Archery body hit.

Now the first one I earn, holy smokes. Dang all that NON-PREDATOR meat. If you can bag one early you're covered for food, except you can't exactly transport 20kg of cooked....hmmm, y'know, when you do kill a moose, if you cook it all up way before L5 Cooking, a lot of it is going to be dangerous---spoiling.

Oh and base calories is 900/kg cooked at L1

It's a well know fact that Moose eat the tails of smaller animals. So hunt a few wolves to get some with which to bait them. :D

Props if you understand where this reference is from.

Two day old Survival Mode game on Voyager difficulty, I walk out Trapper's Homestead near dark to collect some firewood. I hear an odd sound and look around to find a moose charging at me out of nowhere. I freaked and ducked inside the ruined building on the other side of the clearing just in time. I thought moose were "peaceful"? What did I do to it, step in its territory? XD

Yeah, I read "peaceful" as well and figured the moose were harmless until provoked. However, second day in MT and, hey, that kinda sounds like a moose. Where is he? Not there, not there, nope . . . oh, dear, he's charging. When I came to, at maybe 1/3 health, the moose was still around. I tried crouching and walking away and got charged again. Luckily, there was car close enough dodge the attack. I slept a few hours, stepped out of the car, and the moose was still there. I slept maybe fourm more hours and then crouched and walked away and didn't get charged, though the mmose was sill milling around. I didn't have medicine so I had to wait a few days to heal. (I _think_ healing happens during wake and sleep time.) Based on one attack and a couple of days of milling about near a moose, moose seem more dangerous than wolves, at least on Voyager mode.

Moose! Exciting!

The new Mountain Town map is great. The MT map is much larger and more varied than I remembered from narrative mode. Maybe the new maps will inspire Whiteberry to update her old maps and make new ones.

"Day 15 - The Moose is still outside, I can hear it, feel it. I'm so cold. I ran out of firewood 4 days ago, and I'm drinking the last of my water as I write this. Yesterday I saw a pack of wolves try to take on the Moose. There is nothing left of the wolves today but bones, and the unspeakable nightmare which will haunt me into the dark eternity. I was hopeful this morning when a bear arrived, but the bear and Moose are now taking shifts watching the door. I thought maybe I could break a hole in the roof, and fire at them both from the safety of high ground, but just an hour prior I heard hoofsteps above me..."

Day 17 or so: using the trapper's house as a homebase, I had gone up to explore the forestry outpost and derailment. On the way I picked up 2 rabbit corpses from my traps. Found a deer corpse and my THIRD rifle, lol. On the way back, traps were full again - 2 more rabbits. As soon as I get back to the house, I see a moose lumbering around the rock formation to the north.

I crouch, crawl down the main pathway, and take my first shot. Direct headshot. He runs up over the ridge and almost gets away, but then turns back towards me. Right as his head peeks over the ridge, BAM, second shot to the face. He drops dead and suddenly I've found myself in a 3-day meat harvesting and cooking ordeal.

I'd say I'm set on pelts, guts, and meat for at least a month.

Here's a shot of just the meat, not even including that giant moose pelt and all the guts, etc. It took for-f***ing-EVER!: https://imgur.com/3CB4xI8

To reply to OP: best way to hunt a moose is make a fire near his area of aggro and then shoot him as many times as needed (or with the bow). When being charged, run to your fire :)
Happy cooking for your 30+ kg of meat :)

Yeah, my first moose kill was yesterday at Trappers.

Hit him on the first try from a distance, he charged, missed the next two somehow, he trampled the hell out of me. Broken ribs, destroyed ear wrap, and down to 30% condition.

Here's the idiotic part: as he's walking away, I actually picked up the dropped rifle and shot him again. He stops and is like "Are you effing serious?", then charges at me again from close range. Hit him a third time a few feet from me...and somehow that was enough to kill him.

I really should have died doing something that stupid. Instead, I have a full moose carcass on the doorstep to Trappers. :steamfacepalm:

I got pummeled by a moose twice trying to shoot it. The recovery time is ridiculous because each time you're hit the recovery is additive. I'll be very reluctant to try that again. It ruined my stalker run.

You can't bait Moose, but you can scare then trowing rocks, and when he return for their area may enter in convenient position for be shoot.

Moose is very common in HRV Monolith Lake.
Bob The Tomato Jul 13, 2018 @ 4:41pm
Moose do not bleed out. They can only be brought down either by multiple shots (bow or rifle) or by one lucky shot to the head/front shoulder area.

And their behaviour is typical of RL moose. Bull moose, like the ones shown in Long Dark, are very territorial, and will not hesitate to charge and trample if they feel threatened.

Last moose I killed took me the whole in-game day to do it, on account of how many times I missed with my bow. You have to shoot from REALLY far away.

Hello.
I allways kill moose with one arrow on loper.

I.m geting close to moose, he is getting ready to atack then i crouch and aim my arrow into his chest.

When he atack i.m taking a shot from about 15 meters.
If i hit him in the chest where hart is he dies instantly if not he continue to run on me.
Then i simply hit escape load save again until i kill him.
Usually it takes 3-4 times to try but allways work.

Regards..
