You are sure you used all 2 cured hides and 4 cured guts?
If the items are not completed, the crafting menu would be saying how much materials and
crafting time are needed to complete the item.
You spent the 12.5 hours? (sewing kit) or 20 hours (fishing tackle) needed to craft them?
If you did all that, completed the full crafting effort, then I guess you're probably SOL. Glitches happen in the game and this might be one of them.
I just completed a pair of boots which I did more to pass time because of blizzards outside the Quonset garage. I would put the materials and proto-boot into a work bench drawer when the blizzard let up and go do other things. Later, when a blizzard socked me in, I'd go draw out the materials and proto-boot, make sure I had fishing tackle (crafting boots, pants and mittens is a great way to get a lot of use out of fishing tackle albeit taking longer than a sewing kit and still have them for fishing) then craft some more.
Note that 1 hour crafting the boot costs 10% of the fishing tackle condition so 1 tackle can easily handle 9 hours of crafting.
So I don't know what has gone wrong with the OP's crafting. Mine worked.
