Smell, sound, sight. A combination of all 3. Or any one alone, or any combination of more than one. You walk out of a fishing hut and one sees you... it wants to check you out. They hear you, they want to know what made that noise. Was it prey making that noise? All the stink-o-meter shows is the distance from which they will smell you. And keep in mind, no bars does not mean your unwashed body and clothing has stopped stinking. Canines have very good noses, they can smell things humans do not, which is why IRL we use them to track scent trails that we cannot detect.
You likely walked out and the wolf saw you, more than smelled you. Or a combination of sight and smell. And they may have heard your footsteps on the ice.
It is more than one single thing.
What Im asking is this, does one piece of Meat give you more than baseline scent even though you dont get a scent marker? And does one scent marker's worth of meat plus one extra piece give you more scent that just the one marker's worth, even though you dont have the second marker?
And does cooked Fish scent at all? Because Ive never got a scent marker from it but idk if thats because it doesnt add scent or because I havent carried enough to show the first marker.
If you are carrying nothing stinky, scent-wise you might as well not exist to a wolf. In crouch you can get obscenely close to a wolf, even on Interloper. Unfortunately, you can get so close that when it does see you in Crouch, you're in its auto-aggro and it will attack immediately.
