Before you break through any ice you will get a warning "Weak Ice" I always find backing off at that warning is the safest bet - reversing back the way I came to that point. I have been able to sprint forward off weak ice if I'm not carrying a load or it is only a short distance to the bank/shore etc. good luck!
There's only 4 regions with weak ice. Forlorn Muskeg, where it's very prevalent and the only safe stuff is as described. The others are Coastal Highway, Crumbling Highway, and Desolation Point, where you will find weak ice near the edge at the open water. At this point, none of the ponds, small lakes, or rivers in any of the regions have weak ice.
I kept wondering, have you never had an encounter with thin/weak ice? You get red text in the middle of your screen that says Weak Ice, so you back up quickly so you don't fall through. The color of the ice means nothing, you can't see weak sections.
your post led me to another thought. Why cant we make/find ice skates or ski's? They werent originally very complicated objects, you could craft some with the things we have.
