How many rifle shots does it take to kill the bear?!
I shot that bastard seven times! Seven! after 4 he ran, then when i shot him 3 more times he rushed me and tore the ♥♥♥♥ outta my clothes. Im out of rifle ammo now, not sure how to get more ammo. Any suggestions to kill the bear would be great. Or teach me how to make a Pungi trap.

Story mode or survival?

Edit - Regardless...

Survival. You typically don't need to shoot anything more than once for it to blered out and die. Might take a bit to die, but it will; short of a really bad shot to the leg which will never bleed out on any critter.

Story. Cherck your journal and map. It will tell you what you need to know. Again though, don't waste ammo.

The way the animal model has worked is that there are several regions on the animal and each has a chance for instant kill and if that does not happen then a bleedout wound. There are also trivial hits that seem like good hits but if the animal runs away and does not leave a blood trail, it was trivial (no wound).

Given this animal model (rabbits die very easy so it doesn't matter for them), multiple hits that don't kill the animal outright inflict a bleedout wounds with a specific duration depending on the region hit. But these wounds are not additive nor cumulative only the most severe (shortest duration) bleedout actually applies.

This presumes you don't go elsewhere, sleep, then return which seems to cause inconsistent results.

The best place to shoot a bear is the head (typically the right eye if you want something more precise) but there is no sure-fire shot that always kills. Be prepared to get to cover, get out of reach, or be mauled, if the bear comes after you.

Thanks for the Information. I had 4 shots into its general body (torso, legs, etc.) but also hit it in the head a few 3 times (or what looked like head shots) and it didnt seem to do much. I got mauled twice, first time after the 4 shots, second after the 3 shots. Im not sure what to do no honestly, the story cant progress till i kill it. but im unsure of how to get more rifle ammunition.

this is the old bear in story mode, you have to have 6 encounters before he dies. No matter whether you shoot him once or eight times he attacks and you get mauled. Least that happened to me. Each shoot was either heart region or head. Game ridicoulously unbalanced with this scene. Another problem is prior to each encounter the game saves so if u low health u cant get back to safety to recover.Neither can you restart it from the cabin to try again. So guess what,I have to restart the whole Trapper story mode again. Six mauling and 8 shots to kill a bear. VERY UNREALISTIC and UNBALANCED. Other than that love the game.

For the story mode bear, I just shot it like 2 times at each location. There's ammo scattered all over, but not necessarily a lot of it. Try the furthest cabin on Mystery Lake if you haven't already. You need a pry bar.

By the way, you are not going to kill the bear by some number of shot/ratio. You need all 6 of 6 encounters with him in order to progress. Normal bears are different as players stated above.

No offense, but it seems more like poor planning on your part. Before engaging him, did you think about what you were going to do after shooting him and perhaps he didn't die? It sounds like you may have rushed into it expecting an easy victory.
You can survive 2 maulings and still get back to safety on each encounter. The bear is legendary, it's not supposed to be a 1 shot kill.
I just took my time, after each encounter I went back to a shelter, ate a good meal and had a good night sleep, and then went back after him the next morning.

I agree it's unrealistic, but too much realism might take some of the fun out of the game and leave you with nothing to do.

no offence, you dont know how I play the game, I did not rush in thinking 1 shot will kill him, exit trapper cabin immediate bear attack outside cabin, recovered inside cabin then tracked him. like i said each shot was a kill shot(under normal cercumstances), he didnt run but attacked and no shelters nearby plus weather changed for worst. My point is that the game should not autosave before each encounter because should u want to restart the task again u cant.

All you need is a bedroll, a little firewood, and a little food to recover and easily survive. There's a half dozen areas (wherever you may be) to catch 4 hours of sleep. Like I said...it sounds like you could have planned a little better. What about stim packs? That would surely get you out of a pickle.

Anyhow, I don't blame you for being a little bent about the autosave. I'm not sure why they felt the need to add this special for the bear hunt challenge.

So i just walked out of the cabin with a rifle over my shoulder, the bear stands right in front of it and when i want to draw it i get the message that i have no weapons in inventory. I have no other choice than letting get myself mauled.
When i shoot it, it doesnt run off as jeremiah just said but instead charges me instantly. After the second mauling, its just gone without any trace.
Great design.

Literally the same thing happened to me. I got the quest, then went out of the cabin to be greeted by the bear and by the time i got my rifle out he had already charged me and started eating me. Couldnt do ♥♥♥♥, then when i woke up he was gone and i never found him for another day and a half till i was hunting him and thats when i took the 7 shots at him. I feel as though this 6 encounters bit is a bit ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to the story and needs to be changed.

The mauling at the cabin seems to be scripted. Just let it happen. Otherwise this seems to be basically "The Hunted, Part 2". Take one or two shots at each location. Then move to the next
BlueStinger Aug 8, 2017 @ 2:35am
I killed the bear on the 5th encounter. The quest completed even though it was still on 5/6 locations so he can be killed earlier. Can't remember how many times i shot him, at a guess i would say 10 but not all were in the head.

For me the bear was killed at encounter 4/6.
I've shoot him multiple times at every encounter. (if possible)

But thats terrible! Jeremiah gets mauled by that bear, i spend days to fix his stuff and heal him up. He tells me how dangerous that bear is and that i'll never be able to leave the area while he's around. And then i get mauled by it and just shake it off? Also, the bear attack has always been the worst thing that could happen to you in TLD, i want to do anything i can to avoid it. It feels like huge failure when it happens anyway...

hmmm, sounds like sucky game/story design :s
