Or go around the damned wolf :P
But that is 1 region, and there are few others, connecta via tunnels and such
Once one knows where everything is, one can cross a map in less than a game day (when the weather allows it), but even then there are the areas to avoid (wolves, thin ice, lack of shelter) so crossing the distance is more than just finding a way. Going back to pick up stuff left behind is always about balancing the risks and benefits. So think of a GTA where the car might run out of gas any moment, demanding you to change the plans.
However, some of the bigger maps like coastal highway , pleasant valley and timberwolf mountain would probably take 1-3 days to cross in-game.
But this is not factoring wildlife such as bears and wolves. Also the climate can affect your journey (for all these examples I'm going to assume you have bad clothing). ML would probably take: 1-2 days in voyager, 1-2 days in stalker and 2-4 days in interloper. CH would probably take: 1-2 days in V, 2-4 days in S and 3-4 days in I. DP would probably take: 1 day in V, 1-2 days in S and 1-2 days in I. PV would take 2-3 days in V, 2-4 days in S and 3-5 days in I.
I'm not going to even begin to think about supplies and resources as a comment on a forum thread probably insnt the best place to type all it down. So to to walk across the entire map FM -> ML -> PV -> TW would take from about a week upto a month depending on the difficulty settings.
Hope this helps :)
The world is not HUGE, but it isn't TINY. If you look at screenshots of mapped regions, they may seem small. If you look at the Guide and the maps there, they may seem small. But there are so many little "secret" places like caves and hollow trees that you can live in, and so many hidden loot drops like metal containers out in the middle of nowhere, that finding them all has taken hundreds of hours of real time for our dedicated worl mappers in the Community.
Yes, you can speedrun the map in a week of in game time. If you know where you are going, where to avoidm what to take, and are lucky enough to have everything you need for the trek. You can watch Let Plays of people spedrunning Challenges, or covering every single region map in a farily short time.
But keep in mind, those streamers generally have hundred to thousands of real time hours in the game. New players? You'll get lost easily when blanketing fog or a whiteout blizzard rolls in. You'll get lost easily because you took the left footpath instead of thergiht one, because you don't know the landmarks yet. The land masses and terrain never change, but some shelters that you were counting on may be destroyed when you get there, some loot you needed may not be where you hoped it was, random spawns of harvestables and loot drops change from game start to game start.
Each game start is generally different from the last, thanks to RNJesus being a fickle fellow. Yes, it's possbe for the dice to roll the exact same way 2 times in a row. But it's not probable. Ak any gambler in Vegas how often that happens.
It looks small on paper. But, there is so much to explore, find, and deal with in the game, that the world feels huge. Only comaprison I can think of it the map in Subnautica. Once you know it all, you know it all. But until you do, and that will take time, it will be a bit overwhelming.
Avoid Guides, online maps and Lets Plays by experienced players if you really want to get immersed and discover the world on your own, without someone holding your hand the whole way.
I started doing a thing last winter where I was spending like 40 days in each map, before moving onto a new map, but I only got about 240 days into the run before I got bored and moved on to a different game. Never went to all maps.
I think that's what usually happens with an endless survival game like this one... You play it for a while, then move on. Then come back later and play some more. But I don't think you ever truly experience all of it.
It's also worth noting that in TLD, the point is usually not trying to get from A to B asap. Unless you're playing a specific challenge mode like Archivist or Hopeless Rescue, for instance.
But I think to your point, it always feels like forever when I have to trudge across a couple maps. I often get distracted by opportunities that come up along the way, and end up gathering resources at some mini-bases along the way, or else I just end up making a beeline and it takes like 30 minutes of nonstop walking to reach my in-game destination.
I'm gonna play a few other games first, got a queue in my head that I'm working through, but in about another month or so I'm gonna boot this game up again, and I'm gonna finally do the "Faithful Cartographer" achievement even if it's on Pilgrim difficulty for the lulz.
ps, when you gon' beat Subnautica!?
Lol, that other poster was like "Omg you're ruining him with spoilers" but please, I know you too well to actually spoil anything worthwhile... Now that you found^ this, yeah you are just about through with the game. (There is an almost-1.0 expansion Below Zero which I haven't played yet, but most people seem to think it doesn't quite have the same magic of the first game.)
But let me also ask... something we haven't talked about yet... do you know how you're going to get off the planet? :o)
Yeah I need to get back into the game, I ended up loving it but episode 2 bored me to tears because it just teaches you things you organically discovered in episode 1. Anyways is the narrative complete yet? I was waiting for it so I had a motivation to push past ep2
They have added Ep 3 now, but most of us don't like it and don't play this game for the Story mode. We make our own narratives in survival.
A little bit. There are packs of timberwolves that stalk you now, and a revolver has been added as an alternative to the rifle. The wildlife AI has also been tweaked over the last couple years, and I think most would say it's a bit harder now.
