Navigating by using the sun
Have you noticed the sun in the game rises in the South and sets in the North? I am saying this because the maps I have seen ( Do not think they were made by Hinterland but by a talanted player) The Great Bear Island Map shows something different.

Maybe
We made some changes to the world in the Faithful Cartographer update, so maps created before June might no longer be oriented accurately in relation to the cardinal directions!

That I have noticed, the sun rising and setting on different horizons. Those are the new geographic east and west!

@Johnny - since all magnetic means of direction finding (compass) are invalidated by the geomagnetic event, the magnetic poles orientation are irrelevent. The sun is the only clear way to determine cardinal directions, thus is entirely geographic. Wherever it rises - that's east :D

OK

I know the devs have their hands full, But iwould be nice if they fix it.
Nothing to fix, the changes to positioning and movement of the sun are deliberate!

Could it be due to something causing Earth's axis to shift, thus resulting in both all the geomagnetic problems and the sun being in the wrong place in the sky?

...Why ? If there is a non-sense for Mystery Lake and Timberwolf Moutain.

It would mean that the very old map of Great Bear Island isn't accurate any more and the orientation of the regions has been changed... thus, the orientation of the sun is now correct across all regions.

Aside from the limited charcoal mapping system, are there any plans to implement a compass style navigation system into the game at a later date?

Also just wanted to say thanks to all the devs for the on going updates. It's a great game with so much untapped potential that seems to improve with each update!

I hope not! That would break my immersion hard!

Naturally occuring geomagnetic storm resulting in EMP that causes catastrophic power outages and a quiet apocapyse through systems collapse is a really compelling story to me because that's something that could actually happen. Studies have looked at the effects of past geomagnetic storms (which caused telegraph wires to catch fire) and found that if they happened today nationwide blackouts and civilization collapse is a possible outcome. That's how I've always pictured the Long Dark.

Earth blithely changing its rotation or axis is a different story. A spinning top's axis shifts gradually (precession), but only undergoes a major shift if you tap it. To shift the axis of a spinning planet, you have to tap it HARD because planets have incomprehenible amounts of momentum in their speed and velocity (the Earth spins at over a thousand kph). And it only reverses its spin if you give it a catastrophic blow. You can actually simulate this in programs like Universe Sandbox. The kind of tap required to change the axis is equivalent to hitting the Earth with a small moon. Massive firestorms, secondary impacts, and the fact that a part of our planet the size of a small country is now blasted down to magma would be a bigger problem in that scenario than wolves. The amount of energy required to stop or reverse the Earth's rotation, on the other hand, would melt most of the crust. Even if the Earth's spin were stopped or reversed by magic, the momentum of the atmosphere alone would scrub the surface down to bedrock with global hurricane-force winds (XKCD did a "What If" on this one). While I do understand that there's a crowd out there who thinks that spontaneous changes in Earth's axis and rotation are possible without unleashing enough of that rotation's potential energy to sterilize the planet, I'm not one of them. I'm hoping for something more realistic and quiet in the Long Dark.

I'm very sure the earth's axis didn't tilt causing the sun to rise in unexpected directions.. aaduwal explained that well.

I think the devs are trying to say that wherever they made the sun rise is east, and that old map of great bear island is out of date as the game evolved.

This. ^^^

The old World Map provided by Hinterland is likely now out of date as dar as Regional Map layouts and Cardinal directions are concerned, as well and the maps made by Whiteberry over the years.

Good article here, that is relatively easy to read, even for laymen and younger people still not out of High School or College...

...though you can find more information with Internet Searches, and the info and opinions on Magnetic Shift/Polar Shift Theory and Pole Reversals will vary from source to source. We humans are smart, but we haven't figured it all out yet, lol!
