Hides/Guts still 100% after 18 game days
I can't seem to wrap my head around the decay mechanic. I thought I had it all figured out, then I returned to Coastal Highway after being away at Desolation Point for 18 game days, and a bunch of my Hides/Guts that I had left there were still 100% indoors, and in cabinets. These were pretty much all cured when I left, so it wasn't partially cure time during those 18 days.

I was staying at the Lonely Lighthouse in Desolation Point, and stored my newly acquired Hides/Guts from that zone on the floor there. I literally watched the condition of those particular ones drop daily down to 70% in roughly 14 game days. So I guess that's to be expected, but why have all my items that I have been away from in Coastal Highway remained at 100%?

I'm wondering if now that I'm back at Coastal Highway, will they now start dropping in condition. Maybe once you're in a particular zone, everything there starts to truly decay then? I'm not really sure.

I would say overall everything that I've seen at my Coast Highway safehouse, has remained in good shape in those 18 days, except for clothing. I returned to find a few clothing items at 1% that weren't before, but everything else is staying good.

Just wondering about the Hides/Guts....I'm definitely going to leave them indoors and in cabinets from now on, especially if 18 game days doesn't decay them at all, and in that same time decayed other Hides/Guts quite a bit when indoors and on the floor.

Gut and hide decay only happens until the item is cured. Once the curing process is complete the items stop decaying regardless of whether they are in containers or on the floor.

I have noticed that handcrafted clothing..mits, pants, boots and coats keep at 100% condition when stored on shelves instead of in cabinets or drawers...

Really. Ok. You're definitely sure? I could swear that I've completed the curing process on Deer Hides and Guts, just to see them drop maybe 1-2% per day. I'll go back and really take notice of this now. I sure hope you're right though because I have so much of it laying around and couldn't possibly use it all unless it does stay at its final cure percentage.

How about clothing that you've found/looted? Are you talking specifically one's that you've handcrafted only? I'll start throwing some clothing items on shelves now to see. Thanks for the tip.

I can confirm that.
When you lay down something to cure the game engine seems to remember the percentage of the item. Everytime you re-enter that house the engine will calculate on how much time has passed in the meantime. It will first deduct the curing time and then it will apply decay as a multiple of the passed time.

If you enter a building after the curing process is complete the game engine will make the item cured and then apply decay on the cured item (which is infinite).

You can also notice this that if you lay down guts at a hut which you do not regularly visit (i.e. the fishing camp at CH) Guts you laid out at the same time may have different percentages if you revisit them at different times.

It looks so cool too! I love placing stuff neatly arranged around my caches. Provides quick assessment and access. Annnnnddd, I get a warm fuzzy feeling seeing all my goodies.
Use closed storage for extra items now.

So I'm not just imagining that my already cured Deer Hides and Guts are decaying. I wish there was something that I could hang my hat on figuratively speaking here, but it's just throwing me off that my cured Hides/Guts that I left in Coastal Highway, are still 100% after returning from 18 days at Desolation Point. I'm going to keep a close eye on them all now. I've since gone back to Pleasant Valley to see what I had left behind long ago there too, and I'm finding the same thing. Hides and Guts virtually still perfect, laying on the ground.
