Is there a way to prevent bear's attack?

Well, I had to learn by error: a bear was approaching me while I was skinning a rabbit. I was all cool like: "pfft, this big dude won't come close, I got the fire up".

Then he came, mauled me, and I died.

Bears USED TO be afraid of fire, but the devs "fixed" this and now they don't care anymore, it seems. So better stay away from bears!

Yes i want to say no you can't do anything, just the fact they don't attack you on sight.

For your situation .. when i am in bear areas like TWM .. don't harvest too long.
It happens very often to me that i start harvesting for 1 hour then look up and a bear spawned out of nowhere.. some of the strange mechanics.
Bears are somehow triggert / attracted by harvesting i think. Wolves are not.

Same with sleeping outside, everthing is fine sleep 1 hour, puff bear eats you.

Bears will not actively hunt you like wolves. They will come closer to explore and attack if you(the threat) gets too close. If there is a pesky bear around your camp stock up on bait and lure him away from your path.

Brandishing a flare usually works. I don't know if torch ever works. You have to right click to active brandish, not just hold it. Or you could try jumping off a ledge, but the animal pathfinding is pretty good. Sometimes you can climb to places they can't get though. I've only once had a bear corner me in a cave (to be fair it was HER cave!)

Also when sleeping outside the bearskin bedroll is supposed to keep animals away. Also I think the bear homes in on you if you are carrying meat. Sometimes it looks like wolves home in on you if they cross where you recently walked, again maybe only if you carry meat.

Currently, there's only one way to ward off a charging bear in The Long Dark -- a shot from the Distress Pistol. Otherwise, careful planning, understanding their roaming patterns, and a bit of luck are useful in avoiding unwanted encounters with bears. That being said -- sometimes surprises happen in the wilderness. Good luck!
