WHY CAN'T WE EQUIP HATCHETS OR HAMMERS AS MAIN WEAPONS?!
The title says it all. We should be able to defend ourselves when wolves and bears get closer to us WITHOUT a gun. Not only when they ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pounce on us.

Hatchet coupd hurt a bear and a woof but if you screwing around you can cut your foot off and a hammer well we couod bash a wolfs brains in a bear hope your a weightlifter

You can, if you have them in inventory, when the time slows down just before a wolf struggle. You get a weapons choice at that point, but the game doesn't give you forever to choose. If you don't make a choice in time, the game will auto equip the most deadly weapon you have. Bears we cannot fight bak against, so what good would having a hammer or hatchet equipped do with a bear?

I think they're saying that they wish they could "pre-equip" a specific weapon, so that they didn't need to choose one in a panic at the last mintue (when time slows down).

I think OP wants to equip these items prior to the struggle... but I'm not sure what good they think a close combat weapon will do before entering close combat. :steammocking:

So far in my experience with wolf attacks (which isn't much), once they pounce you are guaranteed to get some kind of affliction am I right? The severity of the damage is then based on how well you do in the encounter?

If you can swing a weapon before being pounced, you stand a chance of not getting hit at all. I agree with this request but don't know how it would actually affect gameplay. Maybe it would make it too easy to ward off attacks?

It all depends on the weapon you choose, the strength of the wolf, how good your gear is (condition and protection factor), and your condition because that has an effect on your attacks. Then there's the RNG factor of where your hits strike the wolf and if you get a critical.

Get a weak wolf and a lucky first or second hit, and it could bolt without doing any damage to you or your clothes. Get a weaker wolf and a favorable struggle with protective gear and you might get off with a few lacerations (minor scratches that don't bleed or need first aid. Get a strong wolf and have RNG go against you a bit and you and your gear can end up pretty torn up with heavy condition loss, bleeding, sprains, and multiple pieces of clothing heavily damaged.

A real wolf can weigh between roughly 80-90 lbs (avg), charging at about 35 mph. Something as small as a hatchet or knife isn't going to stop the wolf once it's leapt at you, which it will have considering the reach of those weapons.Realistically, we tend to get off easy in the game. We're talking an animal that normally can exert 400lbs of pressure with it's bite and up to almost 3 times that if defending itself... we're talking pretty quickly breaking bones here.

So, no, the struggle mechanic has always been pretty good and giving us the slow down to actually coose our weapon just enhances it from a gameplay standpoint.

You're not fighting a black bear with a hatchet, none of our melee weapons would keep a wolf from charging you.

i dont get why we cant just have a normal melee attack using a hatchet or a whatever. (like skyrim type games) also let us craft a spear????? i woulda done this first 5 minutes. irl

I am a little surprise you can not make a spear in this game, just for the purpose to defend yourself vs wolves and bears. Well, there is spear fising too but meh. If I had a knife or somthing like it and stuck in a crazy place full of man eating animals, one of hte first things I would start planning is making a spear. Its easy to make and to use. Hell I would make 10 of them.

Its a lot of work to make a proper hitbox and to make it feel natural. this is not some 200 plus workforce studio like from elderscrolls. Personaly, its just fine like this. The dev team knew whats really important for the game and they focused on that. Skyrim melee combat still feels odd to this day, but people play that game for that; they play skyrim for the naked elf mods lol.

Hmmm. I must disagree. I don't play Skyrim for the hordes of sloots. I play Skyrim to slay dragons; and I enjoy it because I can increase my skills and abilities over time. The stark difference (and it is very stark and blatant) is that one game allows the player to create, purchase, or loot appropriate weapons for the dangers that exist ... and one locks you in to a set animation where the outcome is more of a crap shoot that has no bearing on skills, knowledge, or abilities.

Don't get me wrong. I love both games. But ... when I die or rage quit TLD I wander back to Tamriel and don my high end armor (that I forged after developing my smithing and enchanting abilities), slide my greatsword into it's scabbard, add my crossbow and bolts to my pack, and go forth to do battle with the scaly wyrms. The entire game is fantasy ~ and so is this one. Sometimes more options is not such a bad thing.

Considering I am married to a knife/sword maker, that we live in a home we both built together (without contractors, paid labor, or anything but basic tools), and grow/raise our own food 'for real', the limitations placed on survival by the game mechanics in TLD CAN be quite frustrating. When adding in my own years of veterinary work and rehabbing wildlife, that frustration mounts. A brief scuffle ending hours of game play IS frustrating given that my own experience and capabilities mean that one deer and one bear would provide food for months if it were just me. Rabbits (which we do raise for meat) and fish would be more for variety than anything else, and I'd be digging up tubers (which ARE there all winter), collecting far more herbs, etc. to round out my dietary needs. I would be comfortably snuggled in to a cabin like Trapper's waiting for spring and only going out to bring in firewood. I'd have enough fat from that bear to keep a lamp lit, the meat would be dried and smoked, and if I didn't have coffee or tea I'd have other herbal choices (starting with pine needles) to add some vitamins back to my diet.

The idea of brandishing a weapon before winding up flat on my back and flailing away until the RNJesus decides to kill me or let me live is annoying sometimes (just being honest), and a spear would be something I'd make before ever searching for other weapons. It's more than a weapon; it's a walking stick, it can be used to dig up root veggies or snag moss dangling from a branch, and could be whittled in the evening when I'm bored. Properly used that same spear would make a Fluffy shishkabob.

100% agree with this - the whole fight mechanic is in my opinion flawed due to not being able to select a weapon until one second until impact - i mean who in their right mind is gonna wait until this point to choose a weapon? We can walk around with other weaponary equipped, we can walk around with a light equipped - i am often left wondering why certain tools (axe, knife, toolbar etc) cannot be equipped in a similar manner via a hotkey.

i only used skyrim as an example of a style. and come on man they got hitboxes on everything already. this is proved because you can just shoot them when they are not in the charging cinematic.

i guess we'll wait and see what the game is like on aug 1st

Its a lazy way to force you into a quick time event. I agree, real action is always preferable.
