Curing and smell
Anyone know if a 99% cured gut smells as much as a 0% or 1% cured gut? I have it in my head that they smell less when cured more, but I'm not sure if I'm right, and I'm not patient enough to experiment if someone else already has data.

I know that @hinterland_community posted once that cooked meat does indeed cast scent, but at a much lower amount than raw, like 3X or 4X amount less? So i owuld assume the same goes for hides and guts, but I don;t know if the smell decreases as the curing advances or not.

I'll have to dig for the post by Hinterland, just s don;t have the free time right now, with the big 4th of July show getting ready to start here soon, and my BBQ grill heating up, lol!

Yes, as in real life, the longer a gut or hide cures, the less it smells.

I can say from my experience, that this works like boolean: cured/fresh, nothing in between.

Well that was a useful thread. Two confident answers that contradict each other. :D

Maybe I'll start a disposable run and try some stuff out. I think that the ice at CH should give enough visibility to see what the wolfies are doing when I have or drop guts of various different levels of curedness, not to mention plenty of bunnies to snap necks and collect said guts. Not tonight though. Maybe in a few days.

If you air dry a deer hide, for 5 days, in the game, it will have far less odor, than fresh killed.

As far as someone thinking pointing out a private profile is some kind of insult, it is, to yourself. Some people have real lives, with real friends, that convey real information and we don't want little busybodies, such as you, sticking your nose all in where it doesn't belong. STEAM gives people the private option for a reason. The fact that someone uses it means nothing. Point out another useless fact cpt. useless.

*gets out a full stack of Pancakes, with real Canadian Maple syrup, and sweet cream butter, and settles in to watch the fireworks, even though The 4th Of July was yesterday...*

Easy, friend, we just sharing the experience. I will re-check my observations and give detailed report.

My experience is that hides (uncured or cured) don't have any scent (or at least is negligible - I've carried lots of them without being hassled by wolves). Guts however do seem to have less scent when partially cured.

To clarify what I am asking:

Hypothesis 1 - Hides and guts have two states. Not cured and fully cured. They are smelly when not cured and not smelly (or much less smelly) when cured.
Hypothesis 2 - Hides have 3 states. Not cured (very smelly), partially cured (somewhat smelly), and fully cured (not smelly at all).
Hypothesis 3 - Hides have a range of states from not cured (100% smelly) to cured (0% smelly), with the smell being propotionate to the amount of curing (37% cured means 63% smelly, 25% cured;75% smelly).

So I'm asking which of these is true, and it might be worth explaining how sure you are, and if you're really sure, how you reached your conclusion.

Unless someone does it before me (and if you do, please post your results), I still plan on testing this out.

I started a Voy run last night to start testing this, one item at a time. I am testing rabbit guts right now, checking the stink-ometer and checking wold attraction distances. Fully fresh as of now, need some time to ;et them partially cure and start the next round of tests to see if there is a difference. Then I;ll test hides. Then I'll test fish and meat, raw and cooked.

Because I need something interesting to do until August 1st, lol! My climbing adventures are being thwarted by seemingly new invisible walls that I can't break through to get out of bounds.
:((

(P.S.- send nadages, reishis, antibiotics, rose hips and painkillers. And knives and hatchets. only 3 days survived and already 5 wolf encounters testing the rabbit guts... xD )

It might be informative to test and see if there is a significant difference between 0% and 1%, as it only takes a second to get 1% cure. If there's a noticable difference, that rules out Hypothesis 1.

Yep. And RAIN w said he'll be testing, and he does really thorough testing. So he'll have good data whn he has a chance to do it.

I am tersting in Mystery Lake, trying to run the first test under more ideal weather to take wind out of the equation for wolf aggro and attraction distances (at least for the first test). Not so easy now after FC and the new weather patterns that seem to be in every region.... lol!

But I will slaughter bunnies in the name of Science. ;)
