If you hit it a decent blow (it is leaving a blood trail beyond any initial splatter) patience and avoiding any map transitions like when you enter a house are all you need. Even if you don't track it the crows will point you to it eventually. Now, with a bow, I try to nail him as often as I can for the extra experience unless short on arrows or only bow near worn out. That can easily backfire and result in a mauling (but being mauled is so entertaining ... LOL)

Flare gun ftw :)

As above say, dont waste your bullets, one hit is enough, he'll die of blood loss. One tip though, always be in top health when attacking, last games i was attacked by bear twice, i survived but he roughed me up!

1 bullet, hit it, run to hide, wait 4 hours, should be dead by then.

I came to mystery lake looking for a bear because i've been told there is one on the lake but i didn't find it, is that information wrong?

There is a bear cave out on the far side of the lake (from the office) and there may or may not be a bear there. Like all thing in this game, it's random. There is also a bear cave by the Unnamed Pond, try your luck there. A tip, look for fallen trees, if you can get up on one of those you can shoot the bear (or wolfs for that matter) and still be safe.

Near trapper's cabin in ML, and by the pond blind are the other common locations.

Ditto on the flare gun. It is both safe (if you miss) and very entertaining to watch if you stick them with one.

IRT trees, some are safe and some are not. I had a wolf come right up one at me on TWM.

If you are near an abandoned car, you can shoot the bear and then jump inside. I just usually avoid them tho after I got nearly killed near trapper's cabin. It aint worth it until maybe late in the game.

Killing a bear early is well worth the bullet even if you only grab the 10 guts. You can eat the meat every other day for 2+ months at minimal risk and stash the hide for later. Even if you don't eat the meat it counts towards your cooking skill. Below Stalker difficulty you don't even have to worry about parasites.

He is at the end of the lake on the left if the camp office is behind you. Shoot from a cliff meaning get on top of the ciliff and climb down over the edge. I have been on yop of a hill thought he could not get me, He did!

I've seen bears regularly walking in the valley in front of the trappers homestead past the rabbit field. You can shoot them once in the face, and then wait while they bleed out for a few hours, bows make them bleed faster with less initial damage. Make sure you don't make a tasty dinner for the bear. A shot to the face you'd think would leave him mentally challenged, but no, he will pull your lungs through your bunghole.

Get into a vantage point, this means, a place that at least looks like the bear will not reach you, croush, wait it to get close (but not too much) and fire. Aim to the head or torso. If it runs towards you, it will probably "climb" to where ever you are so better try to "jump" (run off a small cliff) to avoid being mauled. A sprained ankle cured quickly with pain killers is better than having that, get your clothes turned into garbage and get your condition reduced in several points.

Sometimes a well placed bullet is enough, but a few times it doesn't, the only way to know is to wait to see if the thing bleeds out. You can get in or out buildings but do not change maps or the body and/or any damage done to the bear will disapear.

I do not recommend to shoot a second time while the bear is on a frenzy state or running towards you, but I admit that I've done it twice, one time it mauled me, the other time the thing died at my feet.

I think that the easiest one to kill is the one near the radio outpost in Pleasant Valley. He tries to climb all the way there and you can literally shoot it in the face and get behind the wire wall with no problem.

No bullets, use the bow. Either one of two of the three the coastal highway bears - the island one has an ice shack you can hide in, the campground one has a rock you can hide on. The bow does more bleeding damage, requires less finesse. Rifle hunting bears is a waste of ammo, bow hunting bears is a test of skill and patience and pays off more often.

I killed all three bears in PV in one hour of playing time with the rifle and four bullets. 110+ Kilos of meat, 30 guts, 3 skins. Two I shot near the car closest to the house in PV , stepped into the car a slept a couple hours (instant bleedout), the other I shot from 50 meters (hit) and shot again from 10 meters (dead). Second shot doesn't always kill, but I'd say I'm 75% with rifle or bow on charging bear since update. If a car is close to shelter, your carcass is easy to harvest on the spot and shuttle all meat inside. If close to fishing hut, you can harvest, take guts/hide to cure, bring back wood and cook in hut. Even if you only kill one in three bears it is much more effcient yielding 4 more guts and considerably more calories than 3 deer. If you manage to always chase deer into wolves near a convenient harvesting point AND kill the wolf with the one bullet, it too can pay off. Bears don't dodge and are much easier to hit. Except for being a smart arse (bears favorite food) and shooting a contented bear who has just mauled you in the behind, most all of the above methods will get the job done. Whatever most entertains you and fits your personal style ;)
