A fire has to have a 1 hour burn (or longer) time to produce 1 piece of charcoal after it is bruned out. The maximum number of pieces you can get after a long fire is 10, so a 12 hour fire will still only produce 10 pieces of charcoal. 1 hour = 1 charcoal, 2 hours = 2 charcaol, etc.

You can also occasionally luck into a piece as loot from a corpse or in a container. Not often, but it does happen.

Hope that helps.

It's been working fine for me (XBox). I light a fire then wait for it to go completely out - you have to wait for the embers to go - then when I click on the extinguished fire there''s an option to collect charcoal.

I don't know but maybe it only appears when you use a fair amount of wood. It varies how much I collect but I don't know why. Maybe you don't get charcoal if you only use one twig. I'll need to experiment.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, IFIYGD.

No problem. And yeah, 1 twig won;t give the needed 1 hour burn time, but 10 will. As long as the fire does not burn out prematurely from wind blowing it out (campfires).

Thank you, I will try it later

If you go anywhere with a fireplace or stove, charcoal should arlready be there so you dont have to start a fire yourself. Ice fishing huts, burned out buildings and generally any house with a place to start a fire should have some charcoal just waiting to be taken.

Yes, but only the first time you click on any particular stove or fireplace. If you want a continues source of charcoal, instead of raoming the map collecting 1 piece at a time from stoves and fireplaces, you need to make 1 hour + fires. Make a 2 hour fire, boil water, cook food = get 2 pieces of charcoal after it burns out. Much more calorie and condition effective to make any fire you light count in 2at least ways and be most effiient. Do a ton of cooking on a long fire, like 5 hours. Get 5 charcoal, level up your Cooking Skill, and have plenty of cooked meat, fish or whatever to last for a few days. Same with melting snow and boiling water. Efficienty will help you survive, and give you more charcoal for mapping then wandering all over a map, burning calories and risking wolf or bear encounters to colect one piece at a time.

Just make a heap of fires next to each other. For every cedar limb you throw in each one, you get 1x charcoal, you can 'harvest' a crapton this way in a short amount of time (it'll also help you to get you the firemaster feat faster)

Is there a way to draw the entire map with coal for survival mode?
Pestilence Jul 8, 2024 @ 8:27pm
Yeah. You walk around the entire map and draw it bit by bit.
