How to Place Items
Is there a way to place items on surfaces? Specifically things like food, firewood, weapons, clothing, etc. I haven't found a way, but I would like to be able to make my house look nice and lived in. This picture made me wonder if it was actually possible:

So, anyone know of a way?

Drop it, right click it, left click where you want to place it.

Not possible, obviously photoshopped.

As I understand it, something like what is depicted is possible though it would take a lot of effort. Each item has a graphics footprint that restricts how close items can be. So an exact duplication of that scene might not be doable to the same degree or same density of objects, but something similar should be possible.

As tnc notes, the scene, while nice, may be photoshopped for the lighting, for one, seems too white and uniform.

It should be more explicit in the game, I had a few long hours back then, when I discovered that it was possible to do with all the items.
And another thing that still bugs me is why some items have such a large area of conflit with other items, it's a waste of space sometimes when you want to stack stuff. But when you drop stuff off your back pack, everything on the ground are merged to each other. >:(

There is a vid some place of the garage done out as a working store. Its possible but perhaps not to that level. If I knew how to post you could see my shoe collection.

Totally possible, just time consuming. Like JiffyPopKids said, right click (and hold) to pick it up then move around by walking and turning. It's position when picking up stays while you're holding it, so use that to figure out how to place things where you want.

If the devs would get someone who knew how to (or cared about) sizing their collision boxes, it would be so much easier to place items. I'd do it if they paid off my shed lol! It isn't difficult, just tedious!

Its not only possible, but practical for longer runs. If you have items that decay, like food or meds, when they reach 0% in a container they will despawn. If you drop them and leave them out, they will not unless you put them inside a container. This will allow you to use 0% food (with cooking 5) and meds far into the later game. So setting up your home shelves in this way has a very real benefit for the higher difficulties. I always do it on loper to keep my supplies around due to the high decay rate. On lower difficulties its more for the aesthetics, but the rule can still apply.
