Flare Bear
I never had the guts to actually try to do this, but I was wondering: Can a bear that is NOT running full charge at you, but slowly loping its way towards you be scared off by a flare, torch, brand, etc. ?

By the flare gun, yes. Not sure about torch, brand, or flare.

I have scared bears with a flare early in the game but don't dare get close enough to try now. Their agression meter got ramped up a while back. Now if I interact with a bear it is getting jumped and mauled, or me shooting Grumpy bear and then getting jumped and mauled. Sometimes I survive and get a dead bear for my troubles.

You can also scare a bear shooting an arrow right beside him.

Does that work with a percentage or is it guaranteed? And does it make a difference if whether the bear is aware of you?

Because if so, this is amazing defense xD

All the times that I missed my shot, bear ran away. No matter if I was in stealth or he was seeing me. Just try not to hit him =)

You can do some damage with it to wildlife, but the Distress Pistol's main -- and significant -- usefulness is it's the only weapon in the game that can scare off a bear once it's starting running at you in a full-on charge. As a last resort in this situation, it could make all the difference.

I tried a torch and a flare and neither worked, I just got charged. I've tried shooting them, but they run at me not away from me when I shoot them. I missed with an arrow and it still ran at me. I don't know about everyone else but the only method I've found for dealing with bears is either shoot them in the face or run for it. Shooting them in the head usually kills them but not always.
