Interloper - Hatchet
So I finally have my best run where I make it to the forge and craft a knife, hatchet, and 12 arrowheads. I've come to find out that the hatchet is kind of a joke, mainly because the condition wears out so fast. Seems like it should be more like the hacksaw and hammer which last a good long time.
I guess I'll just save it for the clothy arm chairs.

I've come to the similar decision.

it is much efficient to chop wood with hatchet than hacksaw.
but then, if all you wanna go for is sticks ...

Agree OP and @rain. Cost/benefit renders it only good for indoor furniture. There is no "leisurely" outdoor wood chopping. @coze, sticks must be an obsession! Easy to collect and cranks ambient fire temps. Smaller furniture can be smashed with the hammer.

Whetstones obviously sharpen but imo these should be saved for the knife as it's best for combat. Potentially, there's a hard repair limit since whetstones aren't renewable. Hammers just need some fir.

Same feeling. I was angry with all these lost calories needed to produce this hatchet...

It cuts wood way faster then the hack saw. I don't cut wood often but when I do, I do like to have as little dmg to myself as possible for being outside. To me, the only thing that really matters are matches/fire. So spending some more calories on somthing like that is not a big deal as long as you build up your raw food and cook several days worth of harvesting in one go.

I think the whetstone is the best argument for the long game. The knife is premium and a must have for wolf struggles. I'll be saving my whetstone for the knife sharpening. Yes, hacksaw takes longer but you can repair it with scrap metal, and there's plenty of that.
Funny thing, my current run is the 1st time I crafted a bow in Interloper. Since that time, I have killed 3 wolves with the knife from struggles, and I haven't shot one with the bow yet.

After a few weeks of a run, I've been dropping the hatchet altogether. I leave tool boxes at various bases and pack the hacksaw. I do carry the knife for wolf defense. I haven't been missing the hatchet.

It's too heavy for what it does, stick gathering better anyway.

Again, wood cutting times need to be adjusted for this exact reason. Or the effectiveness of firewood.
As it is now chopping wood is just too costly in comparison to alternatives.

Can you cut up those cloth chairs with a knife? I can't remember.

Nope, hatchet only for upholstered chairs.
