Things we do for immersion.
So I was thinking what are some of the things (efficient or not) that you do in game to help immerse yourself in it?

Some of the odd things I do:

I don't use the journal until I have a book in my inventory. Said book must remain there if I want to write in it and I have to remember to not burn it or leave it behind. If I burn it on accident I have to get a new book before being able to write in it again. For the record I don't delete my previous entries If I accidentally burn my 'Journal Book.' I chalk it up to having grabbed the wrong book on my way out.

Speaking of books I leave a book out on a table or counter of any place I'm using as a base as a log in book in case someone shows up while my character is out doing stuff. They can sign themselves in. (Yes I know there are no NPC's in the game yet.)

I take my cloths off and put them on in a certain order: thermal leggings, socks, inner shirt, jeans, outer shirt(s), coats (inner & outer), accessories (if I'm lucky enough to find any), head wear then finally gloves. Reverse the order for taking them off. Off topic does anyone else feel like scarves should be accessories?

I don't equip new clothing unless I'm indoors or unless it's something like a hat or gloves.

If I start at Mystery Lake I don't start crafting hide clothing until I hit the trappers cabin. I feel that my character wouldn't know how and the trapper would have notes on making hide clothing that my character could learn from. Other maps it sort of depends on my mood. I'll usually try and locate someplace appropriate for having notes on hide clothing...if not then eh...

I do most of my repair and mending work standing at a work bench if possible. I dunno feels right to do work there. I'll crouch if I'm mending clothing and there's no work bench where I'm working.

I will fire the flare pistol off of the highest point I can find in each map to try and attract other survivors or rescue.

Wow, I thought I was doing stuff to immerse myself in the game but you. You took it to a couple of new levels mate xD

What I do is more primitive stuff, like
-legitimately freaking out when I see a bear and start doing weird motions.
-I also sometimes crouch in certain places, pretending to *sit*. Especially before I write stuff.
-In the journal I write the weather, and what I did that day, everyday in the game.
-When I hear somethin weird, I look up into the sky, as if it will help me in determining the direction of the sound (which would in real life but here I am with stupid speakers)
-Not picking up books that I found open. Instead I carry them around in the shelter and put them in convenient places.
-Uhm let's see what else, I crouch before sleeping (pretend to lie down)
-Swearing in the journal sometimes
-Never ever harvesting the lone benches (like in twm hut) cause it ain't replacable xD

Okay. I will take my gal out into the snow and have her spin around, while I either sing "The Hills Are Alive", "So Long, Farewell", or one of my favorite Alanis Morissette songs, usually from 'Jagged Little Pill'. "Ironic" usually seems to fit well.

It's the good advice, that you just didn't take...

All I need to get immersed is to play. :)

My current base is in TWM Mountaineer's Hut. I also never break up the small chair near the workbench, as I feel that the character would find crafting inconvenient. I have a bearskin bedroll spread out on the bed and sleep in it, as the hut would be 'too cold' otherwise (Not really, but sleeping without a bedroll in a house that has a HOLE in the roof kinda doesn't make sense. Earlier, I used to read each skillbook only once (because you won't gain additional knowledge reading the same stuff all over again), but I've dropped this on Loper, as skills are very important. In general, I try to keep everything neat, so that the place where I'm staying would have a nice atmosphere. Neatness helps survival and boosts morale :).

Display cleaning! The snow brings the smallest dustparts to my eyes.
you know what really breaks the immersion? Not having hands on your gun or bow when you're using it. Or when you look down and you can't see your legs or feet.

I always place food in fridges if I can and I put most of my items on shelves or tables, if I can.

If possible, I hoard books, not only the skills ones, all of them, and I imagine that my survivor will read them on those "pass time" moments.

I can't seem to bring myself to brake down the shelves, chairs and benches in my bases. I watch others play on Youtube or Twitch and am always a little dismayed when they begin braking furniture down for firewoood. I know I always feel at home (even when I can't sit on anything) like I have a home with furniture in a cabin. Everything in its place. I also store my furs under the stairwell in Camp Office as well as guts. Keeps the place from looking like a butcher shop. However, I really feel immersed just playing the game. I truly love this game.

I'm a monster and I don't do any of this. My lair has hides and guts strewn all over the floor as soon as you enter, a giant pile of water bottles sitting in the corner, and then I use 3 or 4 continers in the house which are slightly sorted but not in an immersive way. The freezer is my medicine chest, the fridge is where all my looted pre-apocalypse food is stored, a small cabinet next to the sofa in the livingroom has some firewood and my gun, the big cabinet upstairs outside the bedroom is my "General crap shelf", etc.

I avoid all sorts of exploits. I never starve, if i have enough food (like more than 5 items) or use thirst inducing items like crackers when im actually thirsty. It always sounded ridiculous to me to be completely dehydrated and then shove in 3 packs of salty crackers.

Then i never do hard work while starving or being exhausted. You should feel totally powerless when you havent eaten for two days, you cant chop wood in that condition.

When i start to lose condition, i try to fix this asap. Concerning the gamemechanics, you can do most of the stuff while losing condition deliberately, since you regenerate it during the next night anyway. But in real life, this would be totally impossible.

Obviously i never hunt wolves in melee mode. Even in interloper, you can just strip off all your clothes (to safe the condition) and approach the wolf in underwear with you knife only. No sane person would ever do this, you would try to avoid injuries as much as you can.

Stuff like that

"The Hills Are Alive" and "So Long, Farewell"... songs from a very old Movie- "The Sound of Music". May be just a bit before your time. xD

I've heard of that movie but never saw it, now that I think of it, I might see if my memory was correct. I'll go see if John Denver had a song similar to that name. xD

edit:

Nope, my memory was playing tricks with me. however, the song I was thinking of is called "Rocky mountain high" not "The hills are alive"

Lol! Rocky Mountain High would work, if you dubbed in the word "Canada" for every "Colorado", and maybe "Insular Mountains" (?) or "Pacific Cordillera" for every "Rocky Mountain" in the song.

It might fit that way. Maybe. But it would sound weird. :p
