Games similar to Long Dark?
I think I've got to the point where I've done all that I wanted to do in the game. Are there any other games you guys could recommend that are like TLD? I played Firewatch and liked it, but I really like the open-ended nature of TLD's sandbox mode, and I enjoy the mundane day-to-day activities, both of which were missing from Firewatch, which is a great game nonetheless.

I'm also looking for something nonviolent like TLD's pilgrim mode. I just don't want to worry about dying a horrible death somewhere in a game. Need a break from that after playing those kinds of games for two decades.

Thanks for your suggestions!

The Forest has veganmode... takes away the cannibals and such.

Both games are "survival", but The forest is nt really that similar to TLD in most ways. But something you may want to check out, head over to their Community Forums and read some of the threads about content and about veganmode play.

Subnautica is the closest to what you're talking about that I can think of. Also still in early access. It's more exploration-crafting than pure survival. You do have to find food/water/materials, and there is hostile wildlife, but actually surviving isn't hard, and it isn't permadeath. It is a VERY pretty game. Though I don't get as much enjoyment out of it as TLD, it is still one I do like.

Don't starve is similarly themed. Never played it myself, but it's got good reviews/sales.

There's a multiplayer isometric game called the Wild Eight that recently came out that is story based and similarly themed. Never played that either.

Near Death is very similar to TLD in premise. It's a survive a plane crash in the Antarctic. But it's a linearly told story for the most part, rather than a sand-box type game. I quite liked it, and it is only $17can when not on sale.

Beyond that, I can't think of any other similar games to TLD (that don't include zombies :p ).

I would recommend Subnautuca. It is a survival game with a deep story that develops with each update as well as an extremely well developed bass building feature. Subnautuca is more fast paced compared to Subnautuca with more action but is still very pretty and thoughtful. I personally enjoy Subnautuca and would strongly recommend it for its extremely compelling gameplay. Its also a good steal for only $20 US dollars. I believe it will become $25-$30 dollars after it complete for the deluxe version and stay $20 for the basic.

Nah, the Subnautica devs have already posted several times on their forums, that they will likely increase the price to $25-30 USD for the Special Edition after v1.0, and probably leave the Basic Eidition at $20. But they also said they werent sure yet, and were still discussing it.

Subnautica is awesome. But in any mode other than Creative, you will deal with really big toothy creatures attackng you. Permadeath only in Hardcore Mode. Creative is wonderful if you want to just explore a lush world, ad craft/build like crazy, without needing to collect any resources or blueprints. It is God Mode, no need to do unlock anything. But it also does not have the storyline content like Freedom, Survival or Hardcore modes do. Some areas aren;t available to go into in Creative. like exploring the Aurora, the spaceship you were in, and that crashed on the planet after you ejected in your LifePod. Great game, but really different from TLD in so many ways. Not sure I would have so many hours in Subnautica on this account, playing on my hisband's account, or playing on the XBone, f if i only Played "safe" Creative Mode.

Eternal Winter. I bought it a very long time ago, but only played a few minutes. They've done a lot to it since I think, as it has also been in early access for some time. Game looks incredibly similar to The Long Dark. I really need to get a run going on that one.

There's not manny other winter survival games out there. but I can think of some survival games that you might like...

Stranded deep, ark, the forest, and maybe subnautica?

in stranded deep you take the role of a plane crash survivor in the south pacific.

ark you magically appear in a land filled with dinosaurs,

in the forest your plane crashes on a canibal island.

subnautica your space ship gets shot out of the sky by a huge alien gun and you land on a planet filled with water.

This War of Mine. 2d survival war game from civilian perspective. Deeply troubling and addicting.

Thanks, Jiffy. Stranded Deep sounds really good, I'm definitely open to non-winter survival. I like the look of Ark and thanks for the suggestion of This War of Mine, mf187doubleg!

Cool! but beware of stranded deep~ It does have monthly updates/experimentals but is pretty buggy! and the progress is kind of slow, but hey. there's only 2 developers working on it.

^Good to know. Thanks for the heads-up! TLD has had some buggy moments but the devs do seem to be on top of things.

I was playing Skyrim again recently and thinking how wonderful it would be if it had survival mechanics like TLD - had no idea that there are a bunch of survival mods available. Some of them seem really interesting while others are pretty extreme. There's one that forces you to eat a balanced diet lest you suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

I was wondering if anyone here has tried any of them.

I'd say KONA and you'll might enjoy Firewatch as well.
