... but that said, I think snow shelters add a more significant warmth bonus - not sure though. Cars are 0 windchill and +5 warmth? I don't remember how much warmth a snow shelter offers.
Snow shelters are good before climbs and will be generally safe if you have a fire burning well enough. Location obviously depends (i.e. I wouldn't set a shelter in canine alley by Quonset -silly example since there are cars and houses)
You must also consider the benefit vs. effort to build. Shelters are not quite an emergency measure considering the required resources and time to build.

I haven't tried it myself, but I've heard others say that they have shot at bears pretty much point blank from a snow shelter and the bear just kept right on walking as if nothing had happened. So I don't think you can shoot out of it.
I don't bother with snow shelters though...if I had 15 sticks...I'd make a fire. Even in the worst blizzard I typically can find some place out of the wind to make a fire. Note that those hollowed out trees seem to give wind protection from all directions.
Honestly, only use of snow shelter I had so far was for "fun". I'd make one and use it for cooking/reading or whatever so I can counter that pesky Cabin Fever.
However snow shelter can be very useful in some specific situations while playing `loper and you don't have a sleeping bag.
I rarely use cars for anything else but to hide from wolves/bears. They're simply too cold and as already mentioned, there's always a better place to take shelter nearby, no need risking it in car.
I guess cars are a choice if you're new to the game and region so you're not familiar with the surroundings and you want to take a power nap.
On interloper if you happen to start in Desolation Point, the Basement in Crumbling Highway does not have a bed. However the car outside does offer a great place to take a nap for a couple hours provided you can obtain some wood to build a fire next to it.
In a general sense it also allows you to combat cabin fever doing tasks outside in the car, and requires less fuel to raise the "feels like temperature" which can be useful in various ways. If your not a person who min - maxes that this won't matter to you. However if your just looking to spend a few hours outside and do not wish to commit a large supply of fuel it reduces the cost.
Yes. Cars are +5...wait, to be clear they add 5 to the ambient temp so -20 outside becomes -15 and of course complete windproof.
The main reason I'm asking is I'm staying at PV Farmhouse for ext period while I digest Yogi, did most of the exploring I had left to do, so to combat CF I'm staying in the car outdoors when I can. SO given the awesome advantages a car has compared to Snow Shelter, I'd be shocked if the SS doesn't have a higher temp bonus than a car.
Basically given the daytime Pass Time grind I do that in a car, and sleep in the bed at night.
It's these subtle elements you need to consider on Loper. Contracting cabin fever with hypothermia is almost a death sentence so using vehicles in manner @cute beaver points out can really hel.
It just occurred to me that there's not a single car corpse. Seems like their ought to be.
