Level five cooking skill questions, parasite and food poisoning questions . . .
I just dug through the forums here and at Hinterland and I'm puzzled about the details of the current level five cooking skill. Does level five still stop parasites and food poisoning? Most (apparently up to date) guides here suggest that level five cooking does cancel out parasites and food poisoning. However, various comments and some guides say things like "Now that level five cooking doesn't stop parasites and food poisoning . . . " I haven't been able to give myself parasites or food poisoning in my current runs since I hit level five. In fact, I don't seem to get any warnings when I eat wolf meat after level three. Hmmmmmm. Confusing. Can someone point to an up to date guide to the details of level five cooking? Perhaps also a guide to the current details for parasites and food poisoning? Is level five cooking the same across all difficulty levels? How about parasties and food poisoning? (Doh. I apologize in advance. No doubt I've overlooked an obvious Hinterland post that sets this all straight but after an hour of searching, I'm still stumped.)

You still can have parasites from raw predator's meat and food poisoning from raw meat and spoiled canned food. Cooking skill applied only on cooked food.

To answer the OP's question, yes you can get parisites with level 5 cooking, but it's VERY rare. you can also get food posioning from meat below 20% and packaged food under 25%. so just stay away from raw food, rancid/ruined food, and bear meat.

I fully ate 7 bears at 5 level of cooking. Prepared of course. No parasite warning. But 1 eaten peace of fresh raw bear meat (about 80-90%) gave me poisoning and parasites at once.

Well it was raw so it is kind of obvious that you will get food poisoning

Read the description of the level 5 skill. Aside from being common sense for a cooking skill, it clearly states it only applies to cooked foods.

Thanks!

So, in short, level 5 doesn't make much difference, it's still somewhat dangerous (though presumably less so than at level 4) to eat spoiled anything (under 20/25%) and all raw meat. And warning or not, you can still get parasites, especially from raw predator meat. Is that a fair summary?

I use those purifier tablets on yellow snow at all levels :)

If you can't cook it you can get food poisoning.

If you can cook it and don't cook it you can get food poisoning. If it is bear or wolf meat and you don't cook it you can also get parasites.

If you can and do cook it you won't get food poisoning or parasites.

I have eaten 1% canned food without a problem with level 5. I know it's not right, but I'll take it until Hinterland decides to change it. FYI, I still carry a couple of antibiotic tablets just in case.

If you have antibiotics or reishi tea, then food poisoning is more of an inconvenience than a real danger. There are, of course, circumstances where being unable to travel or being unable to spend the time completing the treatment (sleep for 10 hours) would make things seriously more than inconvenient.

In any case it is a small probability. Even if low condition food had 2x or 3x, the chance of food poisoning compared to higher condition food, you're still dealing with a small number. Any number greater than zero means you have a chance of catching the brass ring, ask any of the Stalker players who risked a 1% chance of intestinal parasites and came down with the affliction, but keep a sense of perspective.

Weigh the risk. Consider the circumstances and the possible effects. Then act accordingly.

Stalker player. Four percent. Nailed that parasites in the bullseye. Was at 17th out of 24 hours in the window. Spent five out of my ten days trekking the entirety of CH and ML for shrooms. 10/10 would eat shrooms again.

In all seriousness it was a little dissapointing to have only a 4% chance to get parasites, and you are quickly approaching the deadline when your risk dissapears, and blam. Your gut explodes. Suffice it to say that those nice deerskin britches were postponed for 10 days, unitl my affliction was dealt with. I must ask though, if one does not treat the paraistes at all, will they kill you? Or can one just sleep the sucker off indefinately?
