Bear playing dead?
Okay, was in Mystery Lake, shot a bear with an arrow didn't expect to kill it, but hoping I could duck into a fishing hut while it bled out). It ran off, and I didn't hear it, so carefully crept out of the hut, looked around, and saw it lying down near its cave. I thought, wow, must have criticalled it on the first shot! Awesome!

Walked up to it and it didn't move. Went to light a fire next to it so I could harvest it, and suddenly it got up and mauled me, then walked off like nothing happened.

Afterwards, couldn't find my bow or any of my arrows anywhere. Not in my inventory, not on the ground, nowhere.

So. do bears play dead, or was this a glitch? Where did my weapons go? What exactly happened here? Any thoughts?

Bears sleep sometimes in this game. If you walk up to a bear, laying down like it's dead, whether you think you killed it or not... if you hover your cursor over it and don;t get the "Bear Carcass xx% Frozen" Harvest? prompt, it isn't dead, Just alseep. Back up and get ready to shoot it again and/or run.

As far as the missing weapons, ot os a known bug, reported increasingly more often latley, in General Discussions and in the TEchnical Issues subforum.

Lots of weird stuff going on with bears and wolves, struggles and maulings lately. :/

LMAO- edited for a really funny typo... xD

Yes! I experienced a bear playing dead once several versions ago.
At Mystery Lake, at Unnamed Pond I shot a bear from the Hunter's Blind. The bear cried and whimpered and ran around, and then it dropped. Cool, I think, time to harvest. As I climbed down the steps, the bear jumps up! I run safely back up the steps before the bear gets me - phew! After a while, the bear drops again. Now I am bear shy! I wait and wait, but it doesn't move. It was really finally dead. Ever since, even it hasn't ever happened again, I am super careful around "dead" bears.

No. They have been seen and screenshots taken of bears sleeping in their caves. Had it happen once in one of my games, but only once. Just because you haven't seen it yet, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Yup, I've seen one too (PV, cave next to the river and the forest with only birch trees). I thought I could one shot kill a sleeping bear. That was what is known as a "learning experience".

I think it's strange though that the bear I shot would run off, then immediately lay down and go to sleep. It's almost like he de/re-spawned or something.

Also very annoying that I now have to make new weapons. This is hard to do on Interloper...

Anyway, lesson learned. At least I didn't die.

I have never seen a sleeping bear, but then again I try to stay as far away from bear caves as possible. Thankfully early on I saw a post by an unfortunate who tried to harvest a sleeping bear. Good thing too, since thats just what I would have done as well.
