Male and female character differences?
I started with the female but checked out the male character and it doesn't seem he can carry a heavier load -- 66 pounds is the maximum capacity for each. Am I missing anything?

I pick stuff up and say "this will come in handy!

Incidentally - just because you are male doesn't mean you can automatically carry more. That's ego, not reality.

Eh it depends. Men are generally larger and stronger than women. The trade off is the need to eat more to stay alive and carrying more means their cardio will burn out faster. Players calling for a stronger male character would suffer starvation, dehydration and exhaustion faster.

You have it right on the balancing issue, but I know some pretty wimpy guys, and some women who kickbox for fun. Hinterland made a smart decision in many ways by keeping them the same in terms of game mechanics.

I am curious why Ms Hale was recorded initially for sandbox play if the original intention was to pursue only the male character's storyline and she would never actually be playable in the final product?

Both Astrid and William have been core characters since the game's inception. Season 1 will be told from William's perspective, but Astrid is just as important and we will be exploring her experiences as well in the future. :)

"The original plan was to play the story of Will Mackenzie. Instead, you’ll be playing the story from two points of view — Mackenzie’s, and Dr. Astrid Greenwood. Why add another playable character? Two reasons..."

OK, I guess. I was only postulating on if she was not originally intended to be playable, and sandbox was supposed to die on release, why originally include a playable female at all? Seems superfluous without the benefit of hindsight...

Yea well if you ever saw one of those survival shows, women have easier time surviving in harsh conditions with little food due to their body so even if a woman carries less weight it doesn't mean that a man should carry more out there while trying to survive it doesn't benefit them at all.
It's all about the decisions that an individual makes and less about the conditions of the person.

There's so many ways to look at it, especially in this day and age. The old generalization doesn't really hold water anymore, and as I said Hinterland was wise on many levels for making them mechanically equal.

You could have a dude who worked in manual labour and built like an ox... but those professions also lead to physical strain and injuries which would reduce the amount of weight the guy could carry, especially in terms of endurance.

Even biological generalities would fall short of making a difference - a man may have a tendency to have a stronger upper body, a woman stronger hips and legs, both are required to carry a load. Again, nothing to say either couldn't develop decent strength in either owing to their lifestyle, decisions (as you say) and prior profession.

I've contemplated turning voices off, but a couple of times in recent memory they've drawn my attention to an urgent need I didn't know I had :). That being said, sometimes it drives me nuts!

I play as female because I love Ms Hale's voice, I'm also a big Guild Wars 2 fan :3

She is the voice of Queen Jennah, and many other voices and characters and cartoons <3

Thing is in this game you don't even have that much of a hard work mechanic, women are capable of building any kind of shelter just like men and chopping wood anyone can do if they know what they are doing. Basically there shouldn't be a difference in the game from the models because if we go deeper into it, women losing weight because of the lack of food will be less affected than men because they store more fat it's an evolutionary reason.
