Sewing Kit vs. Fishing Tackle
Trying to figure out which is the better option for crafting deerskin clothing. It appears that both sewing kit and fishing tackle can be used to craft such clothing. Is there a difference? Which one should I use?

Thanks.

Personally, I prefer fishing tackle, since Sewing Kits are finite in the world, and fishing tackle is plentiful, if you have cured guts for lineand scrap metal for hooks. But either works, just as ell. As far as I know, there is no bonus to time needed for crafting or success rate for repairs between the 2 of them. I tend to use the fishing tackle down to 10-20% condition, then use it for fishing, since a 10% line has the same chance of breaking as a 100% line.

Just a matter or preference I guess, and availability of sewing kits or fishing tackle.

Sewing Kits are better from what I have seen. On any regular piece of clothing it uses 5% each time verses 10% on the fishing tackle. I forget about the hides on the percentage but I know it will be less. When crafting coats, pants etc you will use a fair amount of it so make sure its 100% before starting.

Prefer sewing kit. People will say sewing kits are finite...this is true.....but what else are they good for? You can also fish with fishing tackle...obviously.

So I use sewing kits for sewing....and fishing tackle for fishing. I have a 465 day Stalker run...I am not even close to running out of sewing kits yet, so finite they may be, but you aren't gonna run out any time soon.

Sewing kits work FASTER for crafting last time I checked.

Do they? I'll be honest, i never really paid attention. I craft in .5 to 1 hour sessions, never all at once. So I may well have missed a total time difference in crafting times.

Go to a workbench and see how long it takes to craft a new item with sewing kits and with fishing tackle only.

Yes, sewing kits reduce both crafting and repairing time. When making a coat you're talking hours saved. repairing varies from 20-40 minutes from what I remember. I always use a kit to craft clothes. If fishing tackle can repair under 1 hour I use that, if not a sewing kit.

Wow, I've played this game so much and never knew this until last night. I think Deer skin pants take around 12.5 hours to craft with a sewing kit. I ran out so I was crafting a pair with fishing takle only. After 6 to 8 hours of crafting, I still have over 12 hours to go. Which means crafting Deer pants with fishing tacle takes like 20 hours.

Looks like the same goes for boots...20 hours with fishing tackle.

To be completely micromanaging:

First, beginning of the game it's sewing kit because that's all I have, and I want to craft stuff asap. I try not to repair much till I have tackle.

Second, after that I save sewing kits until my Mending skill gives me a wear/tear bonus so the sewing kits last much longer.

Holy necropost Batman! Yes you can use both for crafting, fishing tackle takes longer BUT you can use fishing tackle until it's almost worn out then go fishing with it. Fishing lines don't degrade, the odds of one breaking is the same if it's 100% or 10%. It's best to use fishing tackle whenever you've got lots of food and time to waste since sewing kits are kinda rare on Stalker, you want to save them.

The 'proper' way to do it is to use sewing kits when you have them because they are faster. However, if the reason you're doing maintenance is to do something useful while you wait for better weather, faster may not be what you want. Then, when you have no sewing kits left, you use the fishing tackle out of necessity, but you only use them down to 10% condition for mending and crafting, then you use them for fishing. Fishing doesn't reduce the condition of the fishing tackle, it either breaks the line or it doesn't, depending on your skill. There's no penalty for fishing with low condition tackle.

I've always known you can use both for crafting, it was the time difference that was shocking. I guess I never really run short on sewing kits until my current game. I wanted to craft full gear before heading to the forge, so I hadn't done much exploring and only had like 2 sewing kits.

I guess I should start micro managing the fishing tackle like you say. Just throw them in the drawer when the condition gets low and then grab them before fishing. Although I'm sure I'll be long dead before I ever run out of scrap metal and guts to make new tackle.

I preffer fishing tackles because they are renewable, unlike sewing kits. The guts you can get from stoning rabbits and the metal from sawing metal objects.

Edit:

And like others have said, you can use the fishing tackle down to 5% and still fish with it just fine. :)
