What to do with (frozen) carcasses?

So far I've only come across carcasses that are frozen for more than 50%. The wiki is stating that

"If the carcass is less than 50% frozen, it is the most efficient tool for harvesting. If the carcass is more than 50% frozen, hatchet is more efficient for harvesting meat, [...]"

So for me this is implying that you can harvest a frozen carcass (>50%) with the hunting knife as well (I don't have the hatch yet) but it doesn't work with the knife. Do I have to equip it or something?

Also I'd like to know if there is a way to heat the carcass up, to harvest it although only having a knife.

Thanks in advance. Would be a shame to let more carcasses left behind. I need those useful guts.

you put up a campfire next to carcass, it takes some time to de-froze so make sure weather is not windy or snowy. once it is %10-15 frozen, it will take just few minutes to take the meat out of it, skinning will take same amount of time tho (30 minutes)..you need at least 3 hours clean weather to defroze + gut the whole thing.

edit: you will be able to gut frozen carcass after you perk up on it. but at start, it needs to be at least %50 frozen

Light a fire beside the corpse and it will thaw out. When the corpse has thawed a bit you can even use your hands instead of a tool. You can also use a hacksaw to cut up frozen corpses.

You can harvest with a knife at any frozen % but it takes a bit longer when it's in an advanced state. Build a fire next to the carcass and it will thaw. Keep in mind that the wind can and will blow out the fire from time to time. Frozen state doesn't affect you ability to harvest guts and hide with any tool. If you get the carcass below 50% you can harvest by hand. This is all level one harvesting. Values change as you get more experience.

So it's not possible to use the knife an a 50%+ frozen carcass?

Click on the carcass and cycle though your options. Each option will tell you if can be used and how long it will take using that tool. I forgot about the hacksaw. Great go to tool. You can also use it to harvest saplings and some logs. The knife should be useable at any frozen state, just slower above 50%

Alright, thanks.As far as I remember I had at least the knife in the inverntory and it still said "frozen over 50%, can't do" and wasn't opening any menu. But I could be wrong and I didn't have any unseful tool in my inventory at this time. I'll give it another try and come back here if there's still any trouble.

Then I realised I was trying to cut 0 lbs of meat because i hadnt moved the slider to say how much meat i wanted to cut. Doh!

However, when I went to get the meat the slider said "0" available. Is that even possible? It is frozen, but I don't believe thawing it will provide any meat if the slider is at "0" correct? All I could take was a gut!

I have a hatchet with me which usually works on harvesting frozen deer. Has anybody had this happen?

You are correct. Zero means empty. When a wolf kills a deer, it feasts. My guess is this is what happened and it stripped it clean. Wolves don't keep the hides or guts because they simply don't like to wear shoes. And don't even get them started discussing pants...

Wolf kills look exactly like your kills. They do not become "ravaged". The only ravaged corpses in the game are the ones that come prepositioned on the map.
