TLD Interloper = S.M. Stirling's Dies the Fire?
Anyone else feel like this game is inspired by S.M. Stirling's Dies the Fire novel? Except for other survivors, there's no working tech, vehicles, communications, or firearms (i know in easier levels of the game, there are rifles, but still...). When playing this game, it feels like I've been plunged into this novel's world, albeit in an area with no other survivors. XD

Um, no? Becasue I didn't even know the author until you posted this and I Googled their name and the name of the book. lol!

Never heard of it read it. And the reviews and summaries of it make it sound like it isn;t very similar at all. But... if it reminds you of a book or series you enjoyed, and you can roleplay and become immersed in the game and the world... that's all that counts, right? It really doesn;t matter whether I or anyone else can see the similarities or relate to what you are feeling. All that matters is that the book and the game struck a chord for you, and you have enjoyed immersing yourself in the world.

(And thanks... Ihave some new books to check out now, thanks to this thread! They look really interesting, and I will look for copies of the series now.)

Stay warm, and stay safe. :)

I meant it as a compliment to the game - for I think the first few books (the first three are the best imho, then it goes down hill fast) would make an awesome game! I was just curious if anyone else had made the connection. XD

Lol! I know you meant it as a compliment. And it is one, to say you made a connection between the game and books you really ejoyed reading. I am just old, and tend to read books written beofre 1990, lol! cF

So... buy the first 3 books, and skip the rest, eh? I'll be looking for Emberverse I then, because the premise of the books sounds really good, and it's about time I checked out a new (to me) author. :)

Stirling has long been a favorite of mine, but Dies the Fire wasn't my cup of tea. The premise that an "event" could change the basic laws of chemisty rendering gunpowder useless was more than I could swallow. Just personal preference. Like I said, I have read and really enjoyed his other novels. Some, I wish he had followed up on and expanded some of the alternate universes that he created.

Times have changed. They hand out tablets and cheap laptops to kids at school these days, instead of harback books, paper and pencils. TLD really instills in me the need to make sure my kids can cope if/when TSHTF, and not be soley reliant on technology to eat, drink, entertain themsleves, and take care of themsleves. When/if it all goes away, the strong will be the ones who survive. I want my kids to be part of that group if it happens in their or our lifetimes. I hate to say it, but lots of younger folks these days won;t know how tofeed h themsleves if there are no drive-throughs that take electronic payments anymore.

Been accused of being too "old fashioned" many times by young folk. And I wonder if they realize that the old fashioned ways will be what keep you alive if a true apocalypse hits this planet.

This game is as much warnings as some will have. You ought to try "The Hunter" and "The Black Death"

I know, terrible wa the day my sister called me and asked "if TSHTF how will I be able to make sure my dog has fresh water?" and I had to remind her that she would at that point be more concerned with the fact that her dog was made of meat. Hinterland, what hast thou done to me?

@IFIYGD and anyone else interested who likes a good survival story - an underappreciated classic of the genre is "Last of the Breed" by Louis L'amour.

Not a western, the book is a 'cold war' era novel about an American pilot who is native american and gets shot down over Russia and then imprisoned in Siberia. He manages to escape, and has to not only survive but cross Siberia to the coast and escape across the Bearing Sea, all while being pursued by a native Siberian who is just as adept. It's a brilliant book, and always been a favorite of mine.

Nice! Adding it to my list of books to read. Thank you! :)

Yeah, I read it years ago, but it had more of a medievil feel to it. With all the political happenings and bear head armor and what have you. It was a good book though. I really liked it, even though the event rendered even steam based machinery obsolete somehow.
