How does spawning work?

Does everyone spawn near the middle of the map or is it completely random? I.e. do I have to travel really far in one direction before I will be in a safe place to hermit?

It's different every world. Sometimes its that and sometimes it's not.

Me and a few others are theorizing its a multi-continent spawn again cuz im seeing a lot of ocean. But maybe not.

One of the fun aspects is we don't know the map until we discover it. We're all currently getting plopped in ???

If you have buddies, there are summoning mechanics to get together. It's not terribly far into the tech tree. Easy to get in your first hour of play.

I have definitely been spawned very very far away from anything that could be described as a main continent. So it doesn't seem to be central spawning this time. Walking for ages is probably not necessary.

Because today I did a full circle around the continent I spawned on which is quite small, and a couple of other people playing who did not spawn with me, said they are on a much larger continent.

Even if they're wrong and they are on this itty bitty continent with everyone else, I have not seen 2000ish hearthfires on my exploration of it today. Seen like, 15. So possibly continental spawning but definitely not localized spawning.

It's not a great spawn or settlement spot with limited area reachable by horse but I already started setting up lol.

Ah fair enough. I’ve seen about 15 people in 20 mins, and 0 people in 5 hours. My friend had a similar experience, so I’m not sure.

But if where you are is a small place(let’s say about 10 min across etc), you might be luck to spawn on an island that you can claim;)
