Seriously? Is there no way to get clean water w/ a canteen?

It rarely rains and I rarely find meds. This is ****ing ridiculous, it's ruined the survival aspect of them game when I'm get to choose "Die of Toxins or Dehydration"

Craft a water barrel for clean water (which I know you said raining is rare but it's your only way to get immediately clear water.) and purification tablets really aren't that rare at all. You just need to actually look instead of, "Oh, this singular pharmacy doesn't have any purification tablets. Guess they're extremely rare and difficult to get."

I play on Hawaii, i've checked all the main towns' pharmacies, found all of 4 bottles of tablets.
Rest was painkillers, bandages, splints, cloth, medkits, morphine, the occasional cough syrup

That doesn't mean that purification tablets are rare, it just means that those items spawned before tablets. I went through all of the pharmacy locations and found 7 bottles.

Still, a simple purification appliance would be helpful. Something to add onto a firepit or so. They exist in RL, don't make the game tedious.

That would "technically" only work with dirty water. Desalination, while still requiring boiling to get the water into a purely H2O gas state, would need some collection device which typically is a long film or tarp covetted in an arc above the pan/pot to catch steam, then the condensing particles travel down the angled tarp into a cup/bucket at the bottom.

Oh, I forgot about the salty water type. I almost never use canteens as I never need to almost. It's Clean, Dirty, and Salty as the types right?

The whole desalination process seems a bit complicated for Unturned, perhaps it could just be boiling it makes it clean.

Just take your generic impure water and found craft it with a frying pan and heat to get clean water.

Look through that. Those simple configurations are all that's needed to desalinize water.
