Maybe for planes & heliciopters it would be nice if they have one in the cockpit (1st person view). Also an altimeter would be great.
What if you don't have a map? Lets say you've walked up into Russia, and now you're lost and don't know which way you should go. A compass would show you which way you should go.
Maps are all over anyway, and compasses would spawn in the same spot.
A hud element in the very top is what we need.
Second, there's no 'we'
Third, it is likely Nelson would require you to hold it to see the directions if it was added, as a utility item which can be hotkeyed. No item can change the hud

Yay..
Also a compass is not very useful for giving directions to friends, unless your friend is right beside you.
Say if a town is right infront of you, you'd say something like it's to the north; but your friend who may have already passed the town would now be walking away from it, because for him the town is to the south.
Another example is if an enemy appears beside you, you'll yell something like west; but your friend who is a little further ahead will look to the west and see nothing.
What you would really need is a grid system on the GPS and charts. This way you could give precise coordinates of your enemy's location that are the same for everyone, and will work all the time.
