Use a map.
Common knowledge that 90% of the time the top of a map is North. No map? Use the sun.
But the compass could be very useful in PvP situations. Like, you're getting shot from somewhere, but you don't know. Your friend sees him and he tells you "behind the tree" but the area is full of trees, so he tells you "52.3° South"
That way you can tell where and save yourself some time
A few seconds is all it can take for a fight to be over, you want your friends there now, not 2 minutes later.
Wearing a watch would display a small clock on your HUD, as well as on the map screen (in case players decide to toggle the HUD clock off).
There could even be two kinds of watches:
A civilian one, which when equipped would show an analog clock with 3 hands, and the numbers 3, 6, 9 and 12 visible, with lines to represent the hours in between. This watch would be white in colour and relatively shiny, possibly giving away your position.
And a military one, which when equipped would show a digital clock with hours, minutes, and seconds written. This watch would be black, and not as bulky as the civilian version.
Edit: As for a compass, this is rather useless as charts and gps fulfill that role. Up is North. Nelson could simply add a little "N" at the top of the map to signify North.
