Do I need to play on an offical server? Do I need to kill zombies and pick up items?

I dont know how often you get clothing but i think you get a weapon skin every 24hours of play time. The rare clothing skins can only be obtained by either purchasing them on the market or by getting keys to open boxes. Keep in mind the keys and boxes thing is essentially gambleing.

When you play, in either single player or multiplayer, the time where you can walk and run and stuff gives a chance for an item drop. A thing that you can do is just go into single player, cheat in a load of experience to max out survival skills (to last longer without food or water) and just minimize without pausing and watch TV or something. As long as the game runs with you "active" in a singleplayer or multiplayer game, you cna get drops. It's totally random when and how often they drop. You could also install an auto-clicker to have you keep respawning for maximum efficiency.
