Will the items disappear if I put them on the ground?
Or do I have to put them in a chest?

if you diconnect all items on the ground will despawn but if you put them in a chest they will remain

if you disconnect OR put them on the ground for a long time, they will dissapear

On servers, Items will despawn after 5minutes or what ever is configed for your server.
On singleplayer, Items will despawn after 14minutes.

This is to increase the amount of resources to the client.
