Gather Materials

For the most part, you need to make sure that you have sufficient supplies to build a house. We're going to be building a basic shelter that can house a cot/sleeping bed, indoor lighting, and storage. An example of this is found in the picture, with the exception that we will be using a Wooden Door instead. To build this basic house we will need (Click the links to see the crafting recipe for each component) :

★1 Wooden Door
★1 Wooden Platform
★1 Sleeping Bag or Cot
★1 Brazier for indoor lighting (Other methods of lighting can be used)

Any number of Crates, Chests, or Metal Lockers, depending on your needs
Now, to get these, you'll need tons of wood. If we calculate the amount of wood required to make the basic house, we will need approximately 15 logs or more, requiring about 2-4 trees to be chopped down. You'll need an Axe, Fire Axe, or Chainsaw for wood gathering, and you will want to pick up some piles of Bolts on the way if you find any, for the door and the Brazier. 3 would be enough.

Choosing location

Now you have everything needed to get started, pick out a location! Craft and place down your first Wooden Foundation on a flat piece of land, with every corner visible, and take note that if you want to make the house bigger, you will need to ensure the surrounding terrain is flat too, lest your additional foundations clip into the ground, preventing you from placing pillars. Try to build near a town for easy access to food and water as well as other supplies. Remember that once you place down a foundation or other placeable items, they cannot be retrieved, so choose wisely!

A few good places to build a base are near Wiltshire farm, Ferwood farm, St.Peter's Island, ( build your base away from the helicopter though, as it spawns military zombies near it), Outons Island, as it has a bunker, Summerside Peninsula, as the ground is flat, making a base near O'Leary Military base, as it has access to weapons, ammunition and it spawns some rare drops (the PEI map) or near any town (Burywood,Alberton, Charlottetown and Motague).

Construction

Once that is done, craft and place down 4 Wooden Pillars at each corner. The pillars will turn green and snap to the corners when you do so correctly.
Craft and place 3 Wooden Walls in between the pillars, they will snap in between the pillars and turn green if you're doing it right. Be sure to leave out one side open to add the doorway.
Craft a Wooden Doorway and place that down at the last open side of your house.
To seal it off, craft and place down a Wooden Door .
Lastly, to cover your head, craft and place a Wooden Platform on top of all 4 pillars.
Light up the inside by using 2 Bolts and 2 Sticks to craft a Brazier, and place it on the wall to light up your house. Place down your Sleeping Bag or Cot to set your spawn point, and craft and place down a Crate, Chest or Metal Locker if necessary.
Step outside, turn around and admire your new home.

They can and will aggro on player-placed objects like your walls and floor, so try not to build inside towns and bases unless you have enough traps to keep them away. If you ever want to make your house stronger, you can build stone variations of the components, and replace the door with a Metal Door instead.
