Unfortunately thats also where I have to end with the praises,
the map does one crucial mistake: Step on the brakes when it starts to get good. The mountain is amazing but there is also little incentive to go there. I just said that there are goodies but those are really just common stuff like crafting materials. And that one tower, ill get to that later. There is really no reason other than: HAHAHA I HAVE A BMX AND GRAVITY TAKE ME ALIVE (proceeds to drive off a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cliff to fall 100 metres without damage) to go up the mountain further than the mines. Speaking of those, there is also not really a reason to go into the mines eigher. Most of the times its really just: Go in, grab *insert resource here*, leave again. Nothing interesting to find here sadly so even though this COULD have been a great scenery object with nice exploration focus to it, it isnt. The scorpion 7 facility is just. Its ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ underwhelming. Loot is nothing too special, the stuff you get just feels like its not even worth being excited about and the entire adventure is over quickly since its just 3 floors with only a few rooms. And most of them dont even HAVE something interesting in it, most are really just: Open door, yep nothing, close door, next room. There could have been a ton of story but no. Its really just: Oh look zombies. Im not saying that the other maps like in washington didnt have that aswell but looking what modern maps throw at you its really just disappointing. The only thing thats actually about story isnt even normally accessible without quests so its really just boring.
The rest of the map is nice but also uneventful. Besides the fire station there is no incentive to go anywhere other than burywood, the NPCs are almost directly next to it, one of the mine entrances is next to it, it has the best and most loot, meds, crafting supplies, food, water, the police station with weapons, thats it, its all there.
And finally, the in my opinion worst thing is yet to come. All the other things are merely just disappointments. Things that COULD have been much better but arent and are just a little plain and boring.
The biggest mistake is the item system. Like many other maps before that came after elver, Buak also has custom items and crafting supplies and while they are rather easy to get its not really amazing eigher. It doesnt feel new anymore, it doesnt feel exciting anymore and worst of all: Its not even rewarding. Thats the worst of it, it doesnt reward you at all. Arid had custom stuff that you could repair and build that would warrant searching special stuff, elver was the prime example how NOT to do it: Add tons of random ♥♥♥♥ that really just complicates things and eat up space. Buak doesnt quite do this but its not far off, really just more complex stuff that serves no real purpose. Next the armor and clothing. Every map before had early game clothing, midgame and lategame stuff. Buak has none of that. Or rather it DOES but its just... Why? The best outfit is titanium vest and riot helmet, gasmask, and biohazard suit. Has the same amount of storage slots as everything else since everything else has the same storage slots, the protection is good but it isnt too amazing in comparison to how hard it is to get.
Because now comes the actually, really ♥♥♥♥♥♥ part: unturned is a zombie survival game which is mostly played in a PVP rust style enviroment. Buak literally. Does. not. give. you. guns. Its like yukon with the exception that yukon GAVE you halfway decent guns. It just didnt throw assault rifles at you but there WERE ways to get some good ♥♥♥♥. Go to off limits or the crashed ship. But that was it aswell. You could get some halfway decent stuff even before, you could get some shotguns, decent civilian rifles, basically you could GET a weapon realitvely easily, it wasnt good but with skill it was usable even against players.
Buak has no weapons. Or rather almost none. The police station only spawns pistols, there is a doublebarrel shotgun but since the weapon spawns are low af that also measn that ammunition is so rare it could be a currency. Seriously I find more currency than bullets. And thats NOT a good thing for any map. Unlike arid where you could grind boring quests to get some funguns that would be the lategame gear buak doesnt give that eigher. The only way to get some strong guns is to grab an airdrop. Period. The only other viable thing is the maplestrike and those only spawn in S7 deadzone or the asteroid... Deadzone ofc, like grab a good gun is not wanted here. I found a revolver in a package somewhere but even then that isnt even good. The fact that virtually no firearms exist and you have to rely on crossbows and bows to do anything is very not pog especially when they have significantly less damage, accuracy and firerate than someone who just raided s7 and grabbed an AR and can no go ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on the entire servers population because they just dont have a weapon that can oppose him. Fighting a guy with an AR with a pistol in normal servers is usually a nogo, here its the only thing you can GET. So basically whoever speedruns the AR can basically create a monopole on the deazone because what are you going to do, shoot the guy that can shoot twice as hard and five times as fast? Since the good armor is also only deadzone loot they are stronger than you, better armed than you and better defended than you. And theres nothing you can do to compensate for that. Unless you grind the tons of basic resources to nuke a vault just to have a CHANCE to get a halfdecent weapon or ammunition. But yeah cool, just go grind the mines for sulfur and coal, then smelt that to gunpower, grab a ton of basic resources to make dynamite, grab even MORE basic resources to make a c4 charge just to get a weapon that in every other map can be obtained by just beelining an armybase. The loot just isnt strong enough for how hard it is to get and that is a very sad and very bad thing for this map. At the same time the fact that explosives are riskfree to get means that raiding bases is actually very easy unlike most other maps. So while all that COULD have been like yukon where you could basically stealth everywhere, and focus survival more than PVP here you cant do that because getting raided is as easy as never before. You probably cant defend a planned raid because they have better gear and you also cant sit it out because they can just nuke your base because they spent 30 minutes grinding 400 explosive charges. Seriously its more ammo efficient to just throw dynamites at zombies than try to shoot them, that speaks WORLDS about the loot disposition.
TlDr: Buak is a map that stops itself everytime it could get good and in a game thats mostly PVP orientated locks itself to only medium end guns from normal maps that are absurdly hard to obtain and even worse to maintain while also inflating the accessibility to raiding-grade explosives harder than the argentinian economy.
Good idea, bad execution. But staswalle has made another banger of a soundtrack and the story is quite decent so Ill give it a pass. Play the story once, never touch it again type of map
well and I touched my keyboard "ESC",exit the task, and then I lost my reward for 2 days playing BUAK......
dude I even have achievement!!!
This is an illegally detained hair!!!
Im looking to start a kindergarten fight in the discussion now, thanks.
Btw i do agree that Buak is a zomboid copy, but Buak itsself is fun imo.
Damn chill out lmao
First and foremost is that there is a lack of place and logic in the island's design. You would think that a port would foster a more major township around it - bars for the sailors, houses for the workers, and so on - rather than being separated from settlements by a long highway. Similarly - why does only one town have a school, only one church, and only one police station? Shouldn't there be roads or tracks leading to the mines to move the ore to the shipping harbor? Wouldn't one of the towns have a tipple and office to support the extraction?
New minerals and things to do with them are nice, but I feel like there is too much busy work and un-fun activity. Do I really need to go on a hour long expedition just to make a few sticks of dynamite to possibly open a vault? Is it really that unlikely to find an actual box of bullets in a house rather than loose mags on zombies?
