use tablets to clean it... or go to scorpion 7 get a crapton of meds and you will never have to worry about sickness again
Otherwise, you will need purification tablets on hand and go to the repair menu on the crafting screen (last button on the car right), and 'fix' the 0% durability water with the tablets. I do not recommend using crafted canteens, unless you are desperate and need water.
As of writing this, do no pick up any water from the shore, since it is salt water, which can't be purified with the tablets, and you will likely be stuck drinking it anyway in efforts to try to safely empty it out.
Raiding the campsites will eventually net you a real canteen. You can keep raiding them as items respawn to get several of them.
