The bedroll in-game is for the purpose of respawning there when you die.
The raw materials are usually pine/maple/birch logs and metal scraps and their derivative.
If in singleplayer mode you can just type /day.
If in multiplayer mode, the in game time will still go on so long the server is up and time of day wasn't changed via plugin in game. (So you can actually just log out for the next 20 min or so when night falls and do something else till in game's daybreak.)
No i just appreciate games that have basic mechanics that make playing more fun.
As for multiplayer night time is something that everyone has to go through because it's part of the sruvival mechanic - you find civilian NVGs / flashlight / headlamp / military NVGs or a nightvision scope and you use them at your own risk. You'll attract bandits who will come and kill you because you will be seen from a kilometer away, but that's the gamble you must deal with since survival accounts for surviving players fights as well.
As for crafting you can make several types of storage with wood - you need an axe/chainsaw and a saw.
You can find axes at camps, chainsaws at farms and saws you can craft with 4 scrap metal (turn it to 2 metal sheets and you can make a saw).
After that turn wood logs into planks and sticks and look for the wood crate / wardrobe recipies.
Later on when you find a blowtorch and upgrade crafting skill to level III you can make metal lockers and wardrobes.
