This is the guide I used and my server is running perfectly.
if you're hosting sometimes its better to host without either if you can since if you do it forces anybody wanting to join to use the 3rd party software, and thats a pain if you don't have either like me
if at all possible do NOT use third party software. I've never heard of not being able to port forward, but if you can do it, it is a very quick and simple process (I find it simpler than obtaining and learning to use third party software and then making your friends also download and learn it).
I use my computer and router to host... so I don't need other software
