which is a whole other issue to tackle if you're fresh off the boat. best advice i can give is do some good study work before you expect to get a server running smoothly. nothing worse than thinking you set everything up right, getting your friends ready to join only to realize you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ somewhere along the way

Your IP? Don't worry about IP or port forewarding. Use Evolve or Hamachi. That's what I use, since my ports are unforwardable manually (DPR3010)

if you're hosting sometimes its better to host without either if you can since if you do it forces anybody wanting to join to use the 3rd party software, and thats a pain if you don't have either like me

if at all possible do NOT use third party software. I've never heard of not being able to port forward, but if you can do it, it is a very quick and simple process (I find it simpler than obtaining and learning to use third party software and then making your friends also download and learn it).
