How do rain barrels work

You craft a rain barrel and place it down. When it rains the rain barrel will be filled up once it is FINISHED raining. The water will be clean and will have no cons to drinking it.

Make sure your rain barrel is outside or has a clear ''pathway'' between it and the sky. If you put the rain barrel in a room with no access to the sky you won't get anything (obviously lol)

Uh, I think they store water when it rains.
Also, could be wrong, but unlike water towers & wells, the barrels' contents won't regenerate if left alone?

They can store one canteen full of water. You can craft a water storage thing to store about 10 canteens full of water. And yes, they will not regenerate water overtime only when it rains.
