Can I play with a friend over LAN or locally?

If I play with a friend over LAN do I need two copies of the game? Also, can you play the game as a building game like Minecraft?

You could try hosting a server with Hamachi or something, that kind of thing works for multiplayer, all you need for the game is 2 steam accounts, the gold option doesn't give you anything except extra characters(Not the most useful thing, you don't need multiples) and some cosmetics. For building stuff you could probably either cut down trees and mine rocks, go scavenging or you could simply spawn the stuff in via @give if you enable cheats.
