There are no crates in Unturned 3.

If you look in the crafting menu, there is a search bar. There is also a toggle that shows you recipes where you have at least one materials required in said recipe. If you have a Metal Sheet, Metal Scrap, Birch Plank, Maple Plank, Pine Plank, or Metal Bar you will see at least some sort of storage option.

I recommend a Metal Wardrobe, made with Metal Sheet (x4) + Metal Bar (x4) / Blowtorch. The Blowtorch is a tool, and is not consumed after crafting. It requires Crafting III.

Crates are the worst practical storage. Use a wardrobe. If you're using crates, you're at a heavy disadvantage. Use a locker, or, better yet, use a wardrobe.

or craft it from sticks

Putting stuff in storages will cause it to not despawn. If you drop an item, it will eventually despawn.
